New Emissary not going I to battery

As the title says , New emissary more often than not won’t go into battery after firing. This is a 9mm by the way. Happened since day 1 , I chalked it up to a dry , not broken in gun. Took it home cleaned and lubed it and more of the same the next range day, maybe a little less often. Chalked it up to crappy mags as I read on the forum are a mission for the 9mm. Figuring was going to put work in the gun anyway I didn’t sweat it.. ordered McCormick mags and sent the upper to get ported. Got everything back including a lighter recoil spring due to the ports and nothing has changed . I’m still thinking it’s a mag issue and here is why. The upper on the emissary is internally identical to a prodigy . So I ran the Emissay upper on the prodigy frame with no issues.. so what’s the secret to getting reliable mags for this thing? I really want to carry it but definitely can’t trust my life with it. Any help is appreciated

Let me be the first to welcome you to the forum. Sorry to hear about your Emissary issues. Have you been in contact with SA customer service? They might want you to send it in for some warranty work.

With my limited experience, I can only guess that the slide is slightly out of tolerence and binds up on the frame. Manufacturing defects happen on rare occasions. Another guess, perhaps it does not need a lighter recoil spring. A third guess, perhaps a longer break-in (300+ rounds?) I have eight Springfield products including a Garrison and Ronin, but no Emissary or Prodigy. So please take my "profound glimpse into the obvious" with a grain of salt.

Thank you for your indulgence,

I kinda thinking you’re right. It might be the spring in the magazine. My M&P 10MM had issues and went back to the mothership to come back. Basically it went to a gunsmith and now I carry it.

Short story is try a gunsmith and see what happens.

@BassCliff i doubt SA will take it back since I’ve voided the warranty with port work. I also had the non optic model and also had it cut for the optic.. I’ll give them a shot today but this may have to be looked at someone beyond my expertise.

Well I’ve got 4 mags now, 2 SA 9rd factory mags and the two 10rd McCormick mags. None work.

Could also try some stout rounds. Emissary is a heavy gun with a heavy slide (at least my .45 version of it is - I am thinking 9mm specs very similar).

I’ve always found various brands of NATO 124g rounds worked good at breaking in 9mm guns.

That said, I once had a DW that had to go back because they had put the wrong size link in the gun, so QC issues do happen. That was causing mostly feeding and extraction issues though, not return to battery issues.

Now I’ve got 350rds through it, longest 350 I’ve ever had to put through a gun due to this issue. Do you know what the factory spring weight is ? I’ve tried 9# and 10# . I threw the factory spring back in last night but haven’t tested it. . Slide action feels really smooth to be honest. I’ve got about 12 1911/2011’s this is the only one giving me an issue.

It actually hands up slightly less when using 115gr . I mean it’s barely not going into battery most of the time. I can shake the gun and it will go the rest of the way. It’s so intermittent that I can’t find the cause .. I may try and polish the throat and ramp a little better this weekend .

Yes, that sounds like an adequate break-in. I would have to research the stock spring weights. I know for my Ronin (9mm) I replaced the stock 9lb spring with a 12lb spring and it runs all day. Some folks say the 11lb spring runs "smoother" in it, but I'm really not accomplished enough to tell the difference. I'm sure you'll get it sorted one way or another. Welcome to the community. Keep us informed.
