NGD/Range Day - SA 1911 TRP CC .45 (AOS) - 9 Dec 25

Lab4Us

Custom
Actually came in and picked it up Friday, got it home, field stripped and cleaned. No way do I do range on weekends when I almost always have weekday mornings to myself at the range - like this morning 😃.

So this morning, hit the range with the plan (successful) to put 150 rounds of 230g American Eagle FMJ and 50 rounds of 230g Federal LE Tactical HST downrange to check out the gun, sans optic.

First round at 7 yds. Was trying to aim at the 20 - I think I’ve shared a bunch how much trouble I have with focusing on front iron sights (and why I prefer optics). Thought this was pretty good since I had no idea what sight picture to use - this was the blurry version of equal height center of point of aim.

Next 21, along with 21 into the red following - player 2 wins!

Next up - 22 into lower red, followed by 22 into lower blue, all still at 7 yds. Then I moved target to 3 yards and put 7 into the top right little blue square, followed by 7 into the lower right little red square. 100 rounds down, 100 to go!

With 50 rounds of FMJ and 50 rounds of HST to go, it was time for…TACTICAL DUDE!

First round FMJ, second round HST - 50 rounds each round.

3 yards, 5 rounds ea left and right shoulder, slow fire
5 yards, 10 rounds center when on target (mag change after 5)
7 yards, 10 rounds center when on target (mag change after 5)
15 yards, 5 rounds center slow fire (most of which I missed left or low)
3 yards, five strings of 2 rounds to center, 1 to head, when on target (mag change after 3, then after next 6)

Poor Tactical Dude…

All in all, a fun day, like all range days, especially with a .45 1911.

Gun seems solid and tight. Fit in finish is pretty nice for gun in its’ category (semi-custom?).

Nothing appeared to come loose after the 200 rounds, about 25% of it fast fire. I did relubricate after 100 rounds since gun was new.

Only malfunction I had was round number 29 (179 overall) of the HST, which would have been second to last fast fire into center at 7 yards, lodged in chamber but did not fire. The trigger seemed to pull like normal (did not feel as safety was ridden up and initiated), but no fire. Magazine (still containing one round) and round in chamber ejected as expected and reloading resulted in firing perfectly. With zero other issues before or after, I’m chalking it up to fast fire messed with my grip a bit, and was also probably why I didn’t notice a variance in trigger pull.

Now I’m back to where I am with my .45 Emissary AOS. Do I really need an optic šŸ˜‚? I know I really don’t for this 15yd indoor range, or to hit my target safety at reasonable self defense ranges. I did, however, acquire a matching color (coyote) Trijicon RMR for this gun so you can bet it’s going on! I’ll probably break down and put the Holosun 507C in my closet on the Emissary as well. While I’m comfortable with results without optic, it sure is nice to see a nice CRISP aiming point instead of a blurry conglomeration of iron sights alignment. I suspect after optic additions, my groups with get somewhat tighter. Maybe then Player 1 can beat Player 2!

Good review and good shooting! I latched on to some painters safety glasses at the Duluth Store. They are magnifying cheaters, but with the magnifying lens at the TOP of the lens. So when your head is locked down, your sights are clear like you are 20 years old again. I heartily recommend them. And it is why I went to optics on my carry gun 20 or so years ago. Here is my current SIG with a Holosun compared to a five inch 1911. But I do revert back to the 1911 a lot just because it feels right.

Good shootin and beautiful gun. poor ole tactical dude loses arms every time.lol
I just wish I could figure out why my left shoulder (his right) shots are also so much tighter than the right (his left). I swear I’m doing fundamentals exactly the same way…I’d say it’s because it was so late into the round count, but I usually do the same if it’s the first 10 rounds I shoot.

One thing I forgot to add. The weak part of this TRP package would seem to be the three included 7 round magazines. I did shoot the TRP OEMs (Mec-Gar I believe) each once (7 rounds), but when attempting to reload them and I had to seriously force the next round to get it past the lips (of all three), that’s when I set them aside. They did the same thing when I preloaded them last Friday, but I thought maybe running the initial through the gun might correct the issue. I know Mec-Gar are supposed to be decent, but seems like these were factory seconds. To be honest, as hard as it was to get the rounds past the magazine lips, I thought for sure they’d malfunction, but they didn’t. But sure seems like malfunctions waiting to happen.

Those three that came with the TRP and 2 that came with the Emissary will be going to Ed Brown for their magazine exchange program eventually.

Great looking 1911 and darn good shooting.

GRRRRRR….spoke too soon above. Sure enough, after reassembling the TRP, I found the exact same grip screw missing that went missing from the Emissary (perhaps a Springfield 1911 trademark?). Actually it was when I picked up the gun to put it back in safe and I heard/felt the grip rattle.

I’m pretty sure it was there when I field stripped it after firing today, but if it was, it wasn’t in by much and I’m guessing that screw went into trash with the pile of used patches and q-tips when I was done cleaning. Gun set on table for about 2 hours after I cleaned up the table and before I got around to putting it back together.

Good news is the screws and o-rings I ordered for the Emissary came in this past Saturday, so into the TRP they went (well, one screw and all four o-rings). Every single screw on the TRP grip was loose, with the one opposite the one missing in the photo only needing one half turn to come out šŸ˜ž.

All four TRP grip screws now have o-rings, so we’ll see if that helps. I know I could use blue locktite, but we’ll see how the o-rings work first. I always find it challenging to get ā€œjust enoughā€ locktite on tiny screw threads without over doing it.

Good shooting! You will come to love that TRP. I am disappointed with the blued 7 round mags that came with the gun, but I have a dozen stainless Wilson Combat mags that I use so I just consider them spares. The magazine springs will ease up with some use. The UPLULA loader is essential equipment with new magazines

Wasn’t the spring strength, more like the lips of the magazines were sized for 9mm instead of .45. Like you, I’ve got plenty of better magazines I can use.

I’ve had an UPLULA since I bought one of the original Shield .45s back in 2017. Before I got the UPLULA, after getting the first two or three rounds in the Shield magazine, I had to seriously struggle to put next round in the Shield mag, take a break, next round, take a break, next round, take a break…and it was at least a few hours before I could load them with all 6 or 7 rounds (gun came with one of each magazine).

I sincerely thought they were defective mags šŸ˜‚!

There is Blue Loctite in a "chapstick" application. I have it, and it is a little easier to get "just the right amount" on it. Less messy as well.
