Pittman-Robertson Act: Friend Of The Hunter & Hunted

Custom
It may be hard to believe today, but in the 1930s the sighting of even one whitetail deer was a notable event.
Deer were reintroduced into Indiana in the 1930s, hunting resumed in the late 1950s.
Today the annual deer harvest is larger than the total estimated deer population in Indiana in 1970.

On this day in 1938, the Pittman Robertson Act went into effect. This legislation created a special tax on all firearms and ammunition, with the proceeds going to state governments for wildlife management and habitat improvement.
Since then, the act has raised more than $14 billion.
In the early 1930s, when many wildlife species were disappearing or declining, the firearms and ammunition industry asked Congress to impose an excise tax on the sale of firearms and ammunition to help fund wildlife conservation in the United States.
