Planning for the Worst-Case Armed Home Defense Scenario

Any good armed home defense plan should start with just that—a plan. The first goal should be to avoid ever being targeted with an attack on your home. The second goal should be a plan, like when confronted with a fire, you have a plan for safe escape.

However, any plan also needs to consider the possible reality of needing to defend one’s home. What follows is a focus on the likelihood of needing to defend your home, a brief discussion of avoiding and escaping, and then a focus on defense.

Not a bad article l. I lived here mentioned you really don’t need to get all tax’s up.

What I will say and this is not any criticism of the Author just the Gun/Self Defense folks in general. For the love of God I wish people would QUIT CALLING IT HOME DEFENSE!

If they made it into your home aka breached the door you are no longer defending your home you are protecting yourself and others with a self defensive shooting inside your home. You just have a lot better less restrictive legal grounds to meet.

Other than that it’s really no different than a parking lot or you name it self defense scenario other than you have more gear and corners and are familiar with the layout!

No matter where it goes down at Learn to work angles, use cover, how to verbally challenge/warn (if feasible) it’s really not that much different!

#1 - In at least one state, mine, citizens have the right to defend property

Montana Constitution

Section 12. RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS. The right of any person to keep or bear arms in defense of his own home, person, and property,...

Montana Code Annotated 2023

TITLE 45. CRIMES, CHAPTER 3. JUSTIFIABLE USE OF FORCE

Part 1. When Force Justified

Use Of Force In Defense Of Other Property

45-3-104. Use of force in defense of other property. A person is justified in the use of force or threat to use force against another when and to the extent that the person reasonably believes that the conduct is necessary to prevent or terminate the other person's trespass on or other tortious or criminal interference with either real property, other than an occupied structure, or personal property lawfully in the person's possession or in the possession of another who is a member of the person's immediate family or household or of a person whose property the person has a legal duty to protect. However, the person is justified in the use of force likely to cause death or serious bodily harm only if the person reasonably believes that the force is necessary to prevent the commission of a forcible felony.

Where most people get hemmed up on property (in states that might have less liberal property defense rules) is they make their statements that their defense was only about property

Example I use in classes is in my state an attached structure (say a pole barn) is you see someone taking property and running away your not legal to use deadly force as that is not deemed reasonable…..

Same scenario but your property you go out and challenge them they charge you or grab a tool it is no longer about theft it needs to be articulated you were being subject to serious bodily injury or death (please for the love of God don’t say “I was in fear of my life” that is a BS blanket statement that tells the LEO you don’t know what the law is!

I was stationed in Montana at Great Falls in the early 90’s loved that state and miss it!

All how the report is written!

While true you still have to articulate it. Had a lady want to argue about “well it’s my property” she wasn’t getting it. Even after I drew out the ole 10K for attorney retainer, 300 an hour and each phone call

But hey it’s your property much better uiu show him and spend 20k to maybe get out of charges than pay your 500 dollar deductible!

Yeah it sucks but most folks have never been mirandized or cross examined on the stand. Yet here they are talking all crazy about shooting people over property!

This plus you (should) have a lot more effective firearm available. I’m out and about I’ve got a handgun. Home? 1301 Berretta with Winchester PDX “buck and ball”. Pistol becomes secondary arm. Scattergun packs more punch than any thing else out there. You’re not going to be into SD inside your home at rifle ranges, so the old fashioned scattergun still rules.
