i just now got a call from (allegedly) social security telling me my payments have been stopped due to fraud, and to press 1 for an agent.

SS never calls us.

they send a letter to our home address.

the number the scammer used was...347-415-7186 (NY area code)

i just signed into SS and all is fine.

i can only imagine the people that fall for the phone scams.

be careful out there.

Times are ripe for scammers to take advantage of the uncertainty of things right now.

I get these emails telling me my SS number is froze, which you can’t do, telling me it was used in Texas and to reply to them, one, thing, SS doesn’t have my email, two, I don’t get SS, on a state pension, plus SS never emails you or calls, you get a letter like @Old_Me stated…..time of year for all scams….. just gotta watch when you click on or reply to

thing to is, my state had a computer hacking, and about 600,000 of us,,,yes, including me, have our information on that dark web.

so of course they offered "free" credit monitoring and fraud alerts to all those that wanted it.

i got a phone call from someone, telling my my information was used to get a credit card in Texas.

but each time that A-hole called me..??

there was a different area code.

after like 85 calls to me i told him i was long ago onto "his game" and to "F off"...

the phone calls stopped instantly

thanks to my dumbass goobener for NOT firing the company that F'd up my state during the scandemic, thier computer system was hacked.

you'd think "smart people" would fire a company for screwing things up...not here.....they keep getting those contracts.

i cannot wait for the primaries

Yep, and mainstream (and social) media is going to help propagate this scam immensely with their constant “Trump is taking your social security” nonsense…
Mainstream media...... I often hate watch CNN. I don't know why I cannot resist watching that garbage. I sit there screaming at the TV like a blithering idiot while edging ever so close to a rage stroke. I wish it was law that when a lie has been disproven, the Journalist (and I use that term VERY loosely as applied to CNN) and / or their guest must take a televised beating. And I do mean a BEATING. Like to brain damage proportion.

Like others here, my information (and spouse) has been “out there” since about 2008-10, whenever the Chinese hacked the US Government employee system (we were both in civil service at the time, and both notified our data was included). We do have lifetime monitoring provided and, like others, everything locked down. There have been additional breeches since then, but since already locked down and monitoring, not much else we can do other than stay aware of potential scams.

Two recent recurring ones are texts of overdue toll fines (we never drive on toll roads) and text and e-mails of resume matches to work from home in sales/customer service (which would never match either of our resumes, not to mention neither of us have messed with resumes outside of US government channels since about 2004 for me and never for her).

There isn’t a miserable enough afterlife for scammers.

yeah, that toll road BS, is everywhere.

what is annoying is that even the REAL tolling authority sends out past due letters...how so..??

an in-law of mine has a license plate of like 242.....nothing else.

he gets a letter from the Maryland toll authority he owes like $35.00 for a missed toll.

the letter had a picture of the car with the plate number of...RH- 242

like what da hell...how did they get a picture of his car, plate number 242....and a picture of the other car, RH-242, and send HIM the letter.>??

when they did a search, 242 came up.....what happened to the RH..????

one phone call got it cleared up....that, and the dumbass doesn't even know where RI Hospital is (less than 4 miles) from his house..?? how da hell is he even gonna know where Maryland is,...?????

Report & block the scammers email addresses.

And when I get a scam call at home (I look at the caller-ID that typically indicates an out-of-state # or from a town out in the boonies in my state) I lay into them & tell them they'll never get any :poop: from me and they should forget calling again based on that. Seems to work.

There's alot of scam-callers claiming they're raising funds for LEO orgs also. They get the same scrutiny.

yep keep getting word out
SS will send letters, just like the IRS
plus the medicare scam of calling saying they need to issue you a new medicare card...THEY DONT do it
its constant battle here of spam and sneaky petes...

so of course they offered "free" credit monitoring and fraud alerts to all those that wanted it.
Which OF course you must then give them ALL your important numbers information.
Which in turn just perpetuates the cycle.
I loved it when all this info was analog instead of digital.
Analog someone had to go to 100 places to get your sensitive stuff.
Digital, just 3 keystrokes....BOOM!

Years ago, I got a call from, what he stated was the IRS and if I do not pay my fine now, I will be arrested and they are on their way to pick me up.
I replied, wow, I will get free room and board and 3 meals a day and plenty of quiet time.
OK, I will wait for them here, thanks.

The guy after a few times of repeating his line finally gave up and hung up on me.
