I would call this "Squirrel" legislation. Instead of removing the criminal element from the streets and thus reducing crime, the usual suspects cry "Squirrel!" to get folks to look the other way and focus on a red herring.
They created the crisis we see and they have large cajones to suggest they have the solution. Only idiots and low information voters will pay any attention.

It's also a prelude to banning all cars with a combustible fossil fuel engine. These folks seem to believe that they can wiggle their nose and make millions of guns and car just disappear, and we the people will cave in and give up.

Nothing in the Constitution bans firearms, and also in my states' Constitution.
