Questions for those who’ve used both a Red Dot and a Holographic sight on same weapon

Does a Holographic sight offer any benefit over the basic red dot? If so, is it only at certain distances? I really like the look of a holographic sight/magnifier set up, and it seems the magnifier would be helpful if I ever shot greater distances, but I’m not sure the expense makes it worthwhile if I already have a red dot sight. Just looking for a little insight from anyone may have used both.

EOTechs are overrated, they suck batteries like crazy and funny enough, you have to zero a magnifier as that adds parallax. Better off getting a prism sight with low magnification. My 3X Vortex Spitfire II works with or without batteries and worked at 600 yds just as well as 25 yards between the CMP range and my local indoor range.

It all depends on the purpose/use case of the gun imo. I have an LPVO for some guns, Eotech and/or magnifier for others, Aimpoint T2, Primary Arms SLX Prism, etc. The battery thing is a dead horse. Carry extra batteries on you, always. I keep a couple of CR123's, 2032's, etc in my range bag and if it's a weapon with a pistol grip with storage I keep a spare in there.

Primary Arms makes an excellent prism for a good price. Vortex prism completely died on me from a battery being in it....... Promptly sold the replacement they provided. I like their medium to high end scopes but never again on their red dots/prisms.

Just as a followup, I decided to go with an Eotech HWS. After reviewing all your inputs, plus reading numerous reviews online, it appears these type sights are supposed to work really well with astigmatism sufferers. That alone makes it worth a try for me, though I always like to try something new. I doubt I’ll do much long distance shooting, so probably one magnifier in my future. If I do get to an outdoor range, it probably won’t be more than once or twice and those trips will let me know if a magnifier is necessary.

The fact that Eotech offers a 25% discount through GovX didn’t hurt either 😃. I always prefer to order direct from a manufacturer when I can so that my odds are pretty good of NOT getting “new” old stock that’s been sitting on a shelf for years, potentially before any recent upgrades were included.

Didn’t need NV and I prefer the buttons on the back of an optic when possible, so went with the HWS XPS2. Will provide a review of my experience once I get to try it out.
