Range Report: .22LR Day + NGD, 4/24/25

Hey gang!

I've been going stir crazy! I took it real easy for a couple of days so that I'd be able to visit the range this week and not feel out of sorts. I actually put on real pants today. I needed to get to the range today to pick up my new plinker anyway. I set my kit on the shelf while I did the 4473 dance.

The background check was taking forever to return so I did a little window shopping. For my "one of each" collection I'm looking at the G17L. I think it's cool.

OK! Finally the gub'ner decided I wasn't a threat to mankind and I was able to take my new plinker to a lane, my favorite lane.

It was going to be a pure .22LR session today but I did not get to shoot all of them. The background check took too long and I had too much fun with my new TX22 TORO. Once I got it on the lane I put a couple of drops of oil on the slide and had my way with her. ;)

I did order extra 16-round magazines for the Taurus but they're coming in the mail. I could not find 22-round units in stock. I'll get a couple later. I brought six kinds of ammo with me to see what the TX22 likes to eat.

I shot at 10 yards today, beginning with the Armscor ammo. It's been notorious in my other semi-autos. But the Taurus had no problems with it. Both magazines dumped just fine.

I'll adjust my hold a little. If that doesn't fix it, I'll drift the rear sight a little. Here's the next couple of magazines using Aguila Super Extra.

AP1GczOR9_PeEBnR7SIxe_-JAlOTsMoJOXn6ct11Lp6IMgGJ4qHWIHxkMj-fU28ZtxgplniUmRngLZbEoYahiYBNl2JUi91fD5VvpkZzIIziISy9r-7gAtGTpLv9mKBSy-d8UmTt9_dQnqlpNoNcbp5JleOhTA=w1719-h967-s-no

That group's a little more centered. Again, both magazines, no malfunctions, 16-round and 22-round. Here's the next target with a couple mags of the Winchester Wildcat. That group is even tighter, despite the fact that I'm shooting too fast. It's too much fun!

AP1GczNZgOY997O8RhEcdM8WAtUV7wA2SSrRiCwGhjbnyKvBrEBhf7weoq9ch9kh52cH1JmwX6LNqmd6ikvxlpP38s-uzhYkWcQLxY1-yvxwCPLwlDTQAF6s2qQQZNfnOBlDGQDxLv_GQdlbG-D4wJVU_BiZvg=w1719-h967-s-no

The next batch of ammo was the Winchester Target and Game. I don't know if that ammo is less accurate or it it's just me. It's probably me. I did have a couple of FTF malfunctions with this ammo.

Then I loaded the mags up with Federal Champion, shot it too fast, but still ended up with a decent group, and only a couple of flyers.

I had a few malfunctions with the Blazer ammo.

AP1GczPiswJadaYsg19HOnN2S99Q_-R4je0moWTAwxvezANlu3E8U68SZAw4BO2uaVadjdxmZM3bQq88Dbl6VyPldHmDkiChJDyIgCgnvm15COXh3hDH-y5m2-YHtznurlbLEWtaVQSMpc7IQh0YYUY_bcb-kw=w1719-h967-s-no

The FTF mals all happened with the 22-round magazine. The bullet would fail to make it up into the chamber then the slide would bend the case. This did not happen with the 16-round magazine. I'll clean the mags and the pistol really good and see what happens next time.

AP1GczM9GKENmXC1219sp8MZmb6i8khBLRmuoRibHOtfudxuc3pSaNfkhKyvsd5DFAthme2SSes2-3RZo25FEhvOGg5N1b231yu1IBnEaHec8rkPk9cCXB2eU3csUy4NeVYXGHm6m7VKBk38XUmaJjDTO1OUKQ=w1719-h967-s-no

I would drop the mag, remove the bent casing, shove another one in the mag, and keep going. My OCD wanted to make sure each target got the same number of hits. I ran out of B-8 targets so the Blazer was used on a 1/3 size silhouette.

The next time I take this pistol out I will take a little more time and try for better accuracy, at greater distances. This session was more to find out what the TX22 likes to eat. I took some leftover cartridges (Aguila, Armscor, Blazer) and filled up one last 16-round mag for the TX22 and tried, I said "tried", to slow down a little. No mals at all from this mag.

That's a pretty good group on this 8" reactive circle. I don't know where that flyer came from. I really like the trigger on this TX22 TORO. Now that I'm getting used to the sight picture and hold, I think this will be a pretty accurate pistol. It sure is fun to shoot. I think all the malfunctions will go away as it breaks in. I don't have much of that Blazer ammo but I have tons of the Federal Champion blue box.

Anyway, I did have a minute to shoot one more .22, the Heritage cowboy gun. I did not shoot the Walther P22CA or the Ruger Mark IV Target. Next time. Here's a few cylinders from the Heritage.

This is an SAO revolver with a hair trigger. Sometimes I forget and will let one go before I get fully back on target after cocking the hammer. If I really took my time with this one, it could be really accurate. Next time. ;) How about a glam shot?

That was my session for today. I took it easy because I'm still recovering from a surgery two and a half weeks ago. I mainly wanted to see what .22 ammo would work or not in the TX22. I'll stay away from the generic Blazer LRN but everything else seems to work just fine. Thanks for hanging with me. Blessings to all.

Thank you for your indulgence,

Hi,

Well done Cliff. Good to see you out and about, glad you’re recovering well.
Don’t push too hard, you don’t want any set backs. Looks like your new buddy will do fine!

I'm talking it really easy today. The last couple of days was pretty active for me. Yesterday Mrs. BassCliff and I visited four antique/thrift stores before I took her out for Friday fishfry. When we got home I enjoyed a nice analgesic. Thanks for your good wishes.

I'm surprised you had issues with the Blazers, I've shot a few hundred of those through my TX22 Compact with no more issues than any other brand of ammo. In fact I just ordered 500 more of them. I was shooting the Aguila SEs a lot but they seem to be waxier than other brands and make the gun dirty faster? They shoot well though. And they're cheap. Automags seem to be popular and work well too.

At first I was seeing a few of the fail to feed issues that you have, with the dented cases, but (knock wood) it's been quite a while since that has happened. These days all I seem to get are light strikes about once ever 200-300 rounds. That didn't show up until I had about 3000 rounds through it. I've ordered the Tandemkross striker and extractor for it to see if that will help, should be here Friday.

There are numerous ideas on how to load the mags so they feed the gun properly. Some will say you have to use the reloader gizmo Taurus provides but I never use that. I have a different one I 3d printed that pushes down on the pin in the mag. I use that to take the pressure off the rounds then tap it so they sit on the back of the mag nicely. Hard to explain, you'll come up with your own way soon enough though.

I KNEW I shouldn't have typed that. Not that I believe in that sort of thing, but it's quite the coinkydink that after 1000+ rounds of not seeing that failure I went to the range today and it happened THREE TIMES in under 200 rounds.

Same mags as usual, same ammo as usual, same everything as I've been doing. Time to check the mags more closely I guess...

A great way to spend the morning. Years ago, knowing that rimfire can be very brand picky, I invited half a dozen of my shooting buddies up to the farm with the only rules being bring all the rimfire you have and your .22 rifles/pistols. And I bought several boxes of stuff I had not tried before. So everyone unloaded their boxes on the bench and everyone tried 3-5 rounds of each type of ammo. That way we could all try all the popular brands without having to buy so many boxes of ammo. I discovered that 40 grain plated CCI Mini Mags performed well across all my .22's so that became my go to ammo for rimfire. Try it with your friends. Great learning experience and a lot of good natured ribbing about the shooting performance. Great day at the range...but I have never had a bad day at the range.

IIRC, all the mals happened on the 22-round magazine. I'll keep better notes next time. Plus, that was the first time it's been to the range, right out of the box. I think it needs a little more break-in.

I like Tandemkross parts, used them in a couple of my units. I'll keep that in mind. Thanks!

I have a couple hundred rounds of CCI mini-mags. I guess I've been saving them for a special occasion. They always work in everything. I do enjoy trying different stuff when it comes to .22 ammo, always curious what will work and what won't. It's all pretty cheap. Being a bang-for-your-buck kind of guy, I'm looking for a balance of value, fun, reliability, accuracy, etc. Right now my fave is the Federal Champion blue box for overall total plinking jockularity. For any competition I'll use the Mini-mags. But that could change as I shoot more .22. ;)

That's a great idea, to have an all .22 plinking party. One of these days. :)

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

And now the concept has a name! A Plinking Party. That is what the idea needed to get traction I suspect. Brilliant. I hope it catches on. Like you, I hoped that Winchester Wildcat or Remington Thunderbolt would win the race but it did not. Interestingly a forgotten box of Winchester Wildcat from the late 70's/early 80's shot like target ammo. Newer production was apparently built to a price. Which tells me the Plinking Party should be ongoing.
