Hey gang,
This was about the only class I could fit into my schedule this month but it worked out just fine. The DSF101 clinic is a basic Defensive Shooting Fundamentals class meant for newer students, possibly working up towards their CCW permits and such. This class was perfect for me to try shooting without my special eyewear. I usually use my SSP Top Focal shooting glasses. They have a diopter (bi-focal) lens at the top which allows me to see my sights clearly. I am right eye dominant and have had cataract surgery on my right eye.
For this class I used regular safety lenses, without the aid. In real life I'm not going to be able to say to the bad guy, "Gimme a second to put on my special shooting glasses!"
There were 12 students in the class so we shot in two groups, but I was able to get my favorite lane all by myself.
I brought my main EDC and a couple rounds of PMC 124 grain.
The instructors set the targets out at about 7 yards and, from the ready position, we practiced single shots, double taps, then three to five all on center mass. I was having fun and, even though I thought I was taking my time, I was shooting more quickly than the rest of the class. I let one get below the center mass box. Oops.
Then group 1 got to take a break while group 2 stepped up to the line for their drills.
One of the instructors, John, came over to me and said I could shoot other than center mass, if I wanted the practice. So I started shooting Failure To Stop drills and the "Fletchers Drill" (three to the chest, two to the head), instead of 3 to 5 to center mass.
At one point, the other instructor, ****, saw my HK and said, "Hey, I need to test that to make sure it's working OK." I told him, "Go for it!" **** really liked it, along with my upgraded Speed Sights. He's a big Walther fan and considers the HK a "kissing cousin".
And then he said something I'd never heard before. He complimented my choice of ammo this evening and said, "PMC is a soft shooting ammo." I really hadn't noticed the difference. Maybe next time out I will take boxes of a few different brands and do my own seat-of-your-pants testing.
At the end of the session, only about 100 rounds, I got to keep my target. I'll put it up on my laser range wall.
I was shooting pretty fast, hence the spread, but **** and John were satisfied that I could defend myself. I also found out that I could do this without special lenses, just my unaided eyes. Then, of course, once home I relaxed with a nice hazy IPA.
I'm playing on the worship team this weekend so I might go out on Sunday after church and get some range time with the music director, just for fun. I'll let you know.
Everyone stay safe and be grateful for your blessings.
Thank you for your indulgence,
BassCliff
