Range Report: Fletcher Arms Lake Country, 8/3/22

BassCliff

Master Class
Greetings my good friends,

It was a cloudy, rainy day here in the upper Midwest but I did not let that put a damper on my fun. I made my way out to the newer of the Fletcher Arms facilities for some practice and some fun. Now that I'm one of the big kids I can take the bench off my lane and practice with my holster. I just have to wear this lanyard on my back so the employees know who I think I am.

The one disadvantage is that you don't have as much space for your kit. The staff has these little TV trays for your gear. Today I shot 100 rounds of WWB 124 grn Nato.

AL9nZEX4nxo4jNqwU4qLAAFqr2HutXd4TT_tFo8miykNrDEFd1eE7Mr_CgWJiTZA74DYIcfuUREFbi6jpyPSGtnlefH-Yz2MUOiuIPnrl_V0GAx4Go4GY5371B4j7Hl9fbzuHjmIthLkbl7lavWhTgcmROAFgg=w1236-h927-no

Yes, I busted out my timer and I was able to use it a bit. I began with a cold 10-10-10 drill as usual. I thought I had timed it between the other shooters but the guy next to me jumped into the end of my string. No biggie. I just used the 11th shot on my timer for the total time. In the video, after I get it posted, you'll see one of the splits (8-9) is only .15 seconds. Otherwise it was a pretty lousy drill. I did get two in the X ring, two in the 10 ring, two in the 9 ring, but the rest landed on the moon.

AL9nZEXl7q8S2M1bavIVuYZ6QN0znkv5ZjCVTIrv8w4UVNISOBhocmLzPJKeJbhbvB5eP7eOtbVAQkDSaXht80lsEQ_DRL7CGuIoiALnRs1lbZ0FqAwfOtv2B4qwDhYYULLUh7rV5nHYcaB6iAwnoQI2ZKN_wA=w1236-h927-no

Then I practiced a live fire dot torture drill at 5 yards.

AL9nZEUre9wz-p2SLOJW6lGYQMn1fUbzJgrd-6T_X3KlEigmXVoGJG9-ZmBKjsudmKf7JnkRS8U6n_u9ctvdtyzGxcZ6Aos8o3j5JRjm2eg5SNHT2GyIzLShxqSiEIIw2y1rXz1mYmjy3TGn98O-6VD_DlWNRA=w1236-h927-no

I know it's not very far away. Those circles still look pretty small to these old eyes.

AL9nZEVYf5cr45u6dU5-QTodL_BNseEmCUD_iXMNBBHVw-154g_2NBOpADJ0Ncz_Ne8SEP3sfGCH3ZbB6WlvDUyHdsWgrDCxnaXGYFUP4nZpwisRXV-i_7uKif50RWXdMh2hZ9yhrJgThPfYvMlD2y00N2MVcg=w1236-h927-no

Five shots in the #1 dot, slow fire: I got three in.

AL9nZEWIkPm2GYZJkO6O2ZWTuf96662gArBKIV0-BniHOvrT-zl_GjcTRsHGGFrLzPrb8Ckk9WAT52GKKGhM0UlaB2IFwjKUmLF6Nzsdwn7Et5Mo39b1t64UnTgcGr7IjxpIypEgr_rM8vnelmCcYLTExu2HZQ=w1236-h927-no

For the #2 dot: draw, one shot (x5). I guess you could say I got three in again, barely. Then again, maybe line breaks don't count in this drill.

AL9nZEWqwCOt3rDJTriVXBUSd27yLkDFOiT4sJEYL_Va2AjPCRvp1t3OmAaBodIH18UNQLWi7B-13ZB8bhFV5n2de3cIaKBctLpJTkwGPAAHCbiBJszRRXWtoNHIBs6KKAa64c4eF1_dRx64xLfiF8W9r1CH8Q=w1236-h927-no

Next, draw, 1 on 3, 1 on 4 (x4).

AL9nZEVHxJufxFU_NHWNTaoU68LJKtTsKXotaBFYBSiSZUXxwT3uYlvtHBD13PAfOFUmV3bTj_HLaSKLU3qd__zgzWl-hEuwK6PoVZ3ogeoAtzJgatzEt4aW7zaqky0gyIeR7vLZ2bdGVh2r8p11HGzwDT9JIQ=w1236-h927-no

Since shooting this drill live is harder than with my laser, I decided to tape over everything. Here's dot #5, draw, five shots strong hand only. I had two good hits.

AL9nZEUWLExHzkwQCU-t6Q5b9OolW10dKoUECBMO9VKKn4Q5AFmmeA0f2rIBahlh7E0U7O8Z0hnBo7WBdbSrH4pAT0EDCKFSmRW8-U8KOEjgGSsFBHUk8Ls9KJs99KHAl70pSwb_UBIS5CWDr-q6C8L5RelzQA=w1236-h927-no

For #6 and #7: draw, 2 on 6, 2 on 7 (x4). I seemed to shoot 7 a lot better than 6.

AL9nZEWowjAK0duuPtBqt8pAgnf28kD_18aO8565EZSp7ItdyXSTm9GgyKZ7Tq1Dliqemlssg43tGK5eEF-V3sqg3SaQwxYBwiWLFCB6tpd8SVPkc-_vL3zDEWD43TCNqw5q-3MA51HCPDoDBX0ErLExnP-rtg=w1236-h927-no

Here's #8: from ready, five shots weak hand only. For me, this doesn't suck too bad.

AL9nZEV8VsB67l-j0h0p9FknyvnVKaC_uLm7F6iVOzvMtxDgctuMO746KLOg5bkkJnRcMnHNhHmD633-i3za268Sb28wq81QTuM4gGdEpOHdnXtsQ6yKeoMBBQ5rHFfR1s_AvPr3bESpY61bErnTcP01US-QOA=w1236-h927-no

For the last two: draw, 1 on 9, speed reload, 1 on 10 (x3). Again, I seemed to shoot the right dot (#10) better than #9.

AL9nZEXMHy5HsZv16lLIYi6KTJzYTPoQM3sTozysPRsBH6pJmpVj655QHtHyCWOa8a7nEcvtwfK7726zCJ0_G-ibAECS8UqBbJ6VU7guO1yH8Ph7t_I4LCXdqqLt2QcwYqpEADStUAOESdwBqa8fTbfh05YShg=w1236-h927-no

The range had quieted down a bit by now so I put out a full size silhouette for some quick draw live fire at seven yards. This was my first shot. Not bad.

AL9nZEVpLw2LndlUCcoFdhzW-0d8O1H3o_lKHMioQz_Ex5x-Ywzj2TN9f9UE0O2TZAOcaR1AMUfmJ2FyAGb7BxfR99hTG82J-po58rSNaMKiUdLa5WbqgQOHtnSf9lFDqn8e8cJM9lnV-9HWYeRP1mx4Q-f6uA=w1236-h927-no

The timer got me at 1.55 seconds. Ha! I am the 147th fastest gun in the upper Midwest.

AL9nZEX0okkULtrbZdlVrhx1GoUsuUDP1y7D2DNXWhY2psqKDSPyDvyQwUx_r-Mofh1wYP6jpRltgAcjS8ExrnjbOdbFsFkFL7wqcHZUBfrvWUeDp1CDThe3AOfWlF3jfnweRpyaKLdbel32EEIE-TrCysp_iQ=w1236-h927-no

I did a total of five timed quick draws. In order they were 1.55s, 1.51s, 1.48s, 1.39s, and the last shoulder hit was 1.34s.

AL9nZEWuWAvYxXBztp1E5CXbNBam8HSEV1cbpl7JLNnRrbsYPLcUzBnZFokIfWNC87wlQD8NQhQjrzgg3NhyT69OH98ZOEYaAie3NgWobxI_I2JbOyumWF2mFT1hWxOoz4_qfj9YXsz5KfjWdoZn_IFvRlVbSQ=w1236-h927-no

I saved three bullets for a Failure to Stop drill. First shot 1.69s, second shot 2.22s, head shot 3.18s.

I marked the FtS shots and took a picture for posterity.

AL9nZEV2WcO9ErdrZWaWzE_8lu-dUF1BOAghlWufJq_imDJPpfThn4640rmkVg94CWPrSXqNjEEHkjTpB-Ny6orNp_ugjN8IgCFLGH4XknjYQyLHY31KYFTxXQWPELd2kMlKbp3TL97MqYrC9wAOUOouha79Cw=w1236-h927-no

Now it's time for some fun! I brought along my new range toy, a ProMag 32 round mag. I think it looks mean.

AL9nZEV_72GnSTIF_wpVpQGEZGkFh9KfChBzsVlUg919nhQ0am0-X7Yum9Uab0k4CsFk4FSMBwnH4scNHv5SD7kIl_DgAB2Kz3VmLPn4PuCmUoKYhp5vVmlZ_vZiKjOkGSwyxMz14k6_4eLM2cogK0-YtathMA=w1236-h927-no

I sent the reactive 12x18 silhouette out to 10 yards and dumped half of this 32 round magazine on it. Cool!

AL9nZEW0eVZZhq0HK5J-uZLOaut8jpkPYsAPvrHF74aFhj3g_EafRAUxiEqKgsYrF9eVVZGNrl3E4kBgGF2pMZm2e4FGDB_7PMdSi7uczdyXG_N11eVqQl-hZVUXXp32DGqfPNTfTgyEAO3ZaOLy-IPNCrhviw=w1236-h927-no

Then I sent the target out to 25 yards, took a little more time, but still had lousy results. Drat.

AL9nZEV0TQS2OOEkemdXvw5mOjdcE5Y6PyjaLZNE00DDmZbrlpeMulcJ7GZWBgv4DqgAuJ8ZlRpplWXmUMxoQriXQm-qlZcebJLqrQ3bcv8PBmmxXGl0rkmoEDsZhNWfHn7vz18XcXnou26uO3EgHuTR01LtOA=w1236-h927-no

I'm happy to report that the magazine worked flawlessly this first time, no feed issues, and I even had slide lock on empty. After this I had a little more fun with 50 rounds through my P22 on this target but it was nothing to write home about. I'll save you my embarrassment.

Next Wednesday I'll be taking a drawing clinic that "will focus on presenting our weapons from the holster while emphasizing defensive accuracy and perceived penalties of misses." I'm hoping to get some instructions and practice tips that will help me be little faster and a little more accurate. Maybe this old noob can learn some new tricks.

I'm glad you guys came along today. Thanks for putting up with me!

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Nice range report.

I will offer a suggestion, as I am a speed demon. ( ask @SimonRL ) 🙂

Ditch the timer
Ditch the drills
Ditch the 10-10-10

Focus for 2 weeks on accuracy.
Slow
Steady
Long delays
Form and function
Use the Dot torture targets

The timer has you stuck on speed

When you nail the dot torture in the circles like clockwork at 5-7-10 yards nice and slow, mag after mag, then go for speed

My .02 cents outside looking in

I make @KillerFord1977 right and I know how hard that is for him to say because he’s the guns-a-blazin’ John Wick one of the two of us, while I’m Mr Miyagi, wax on, wax off. I alway practice with 3 or 4 inch targets out to twenty yards and I focus on my breathing, my grip, my stance. I visualize pulling the trigger straight back. I’m very zen about the whole thing and when I’ve found my place in the universe I’ll break out a 6 inch splatterburst target and it will look like a hot air balloon - almost unmissable. A B8 at 10 yds feels like cheating.

Shooting with a timer is fine as long as your fundamentals don’t go out the window. I know you’ve heard the old chestnut: slow is smooth and smooth is fast. It’s true.

You’ve been GROUNDED! Hahaha.
KillerFord has some good advice. Focus too much on one thing then other skills may suffer. Back to basics! I’m doing that this weekend. Slow fire, sight picture, trigger pull etc… it never ends.
If you bring a timer with you to the range next time your punishment will be extended to 3 weeks!

Hi,

Glad you had a good time. Again I wanted to go to range but thunderstorms all day here yesterday and its already raining out again. There is no indoor ranges in the area here.

Thanks! I hope you get out to the range soon. I miss my outdoor range. You know it never rains in Southern California. ;) But here most of the ranges are indoors. I need to find a place outdoors. It's mostly shotgun clubs around here.

Thank you for your indulgence,

I've been a bad boy. 😉

Good idea. I'll take my timer out of my range bag. That way I won't be tempted. :ROFLMAO:
