Greetings and Salutations!

This week I wanted a defensive work out with some live fire using my SA Garrison 1911 .45 and my hybrid IWB holster.

That's a Raw Dog Tactical hybrid IWB holster, leather back with kydex front. I added the DCC clips. I like them much better than standard FOMI clips. The class was downrange of the booths. This gives us room to draw and move around just a little.

We just accessed the booths from the back side to load our mags and get kitted up. There were no guns allowed on the bench itself because the store was still open. We'd go downrange to load and make ready.

The class shot different exercises at 5, 7, and 10 yards. The guy next to me (not pictured) was fairly new to holster draw so the instructors paid a little extra attention to him. He did OK.

We started slow, each step of the draw, grip, lift, rotate, presentation, extension, and single shot to center mass on command. After a few rounds of this the procedure was condensed to a single "Up!" command to put 3 to 5 shots on center mass. It took me a few rounds to get warmed up. You see a few gone just left of center mass.

My head shot was a little left too, but I did pretty well when the numbers were called. I missed just one of the numbered shots. You'll notice that some numbers I shot better than others. I'm not sure if it was color, position, or just rushing.

After ventilating the first target we reloaded while the instructors put up new targets.

We would do a few "around the track" drills as they like to call it. For example, the first round we got only six shots to try and hit all the numbers. Yay me! ;)

My first "round the track" was pretty good. The instructors then started throwing different commands at us, to put our hits in different spots.

An "Up!" command meant three to five shots on center mass. An "A" command meant three to five shots in the A box below the silhouette. A number meant hit the number, same with "head shot!" command.

I did pretty well this evening, considering accuracy and speed in a defensive situation, drawing with different equipment, remembering "grip and flip", etc. It was a good training/practice session with my 1911 and IWB holster. Just in case my regular EDC is in the shop, I feel confident I could utilize my .45 in a defensive situation.

I won't be able to get to the range next week, too busy. But the week after will be an "accuracy only" practice session. I'm going to try my best to get 100 points in that B-8 target at 10 yards. Then I'll push it out to 15 yards and start all over again. It's a never ending battle. Thanks for stopping by and sharing my fun. :)

Hi,

Did you work on mag changes? That comes up really quickly on a 1911. I’d take my Prodigy and use 26 rd mags!

Oh yes! I did lots of mag swaps. I used three 7 round magazines and 2 (CMC) ten round magazines. For some of these drills I'd have to do two slidelock reloads. Fun stuff!

I've decided to get a slide release extension along with a mag release extension from Wilson Combat. It will make manipulating this 1911 easier.

I've got a 32 round magazine for my XD9. But I wanted to work with my Garrison this time. ;)

Hi,

Range time is fun time… 👍
Nice session

Notice your shots coincide with your range posts and discussions on low left…… 🙂 as you state your Achilles heal

There’s your matrix to work thru

Thanks. I did a lot of stuff right but I still have some "wrong" to correct. No practice for me this week but next week I will concentrate on pure accuracy fundamentals. 😉

Thank you for your indulgence,
