Range Report: My Two Optics, One More Time! 3/5/26

BassCliff

Hello!

Well, one more time for now. This is the fifth range trip shooting just my two optic accessorized pistols. I'll take a little break, get these two cleaned up real good, and shoot something else for a bit. Gosh, I guess you can tell I live in Wisconsin. I had lunch with friends and this was in the parking lot when I left for the range.

I thought I was going to get my favorite lane #7 but as I was getting my kit ready the clerk came over and said to take #8. I told him, that's OK, it's my favorite too. For most of this session the distance will be 10 yards, 10-shot strings, unless otherwise noted.

You've seen these two a few times lately, XD9 Mod.3 and Echelon 4.5F Comp, both with Holosun 507C-X2 Green. I ran 100 rounds of S&B 124 grain through both.

I started with the Echelon. I wanted to check the zero on the optic so I shot three rounds from my backpack rest.

With two out of three in the X-ring, I'd say the zero is pretty good. Shooting freehand, I had a few pretty good targets but still had a few low-left flyers. One of these days I'll get consistent with this pistol.

With my "aim small, miss small" reactive circle I came dangerously close to getting them all inside 4"

After putting 50 rounds through the Echelon it was time for the same using the Mod.3. Using my backpack rest, I checked the zero on it too. You remember earlier this week the optic had come loose. I torqued it up properly when I got home. It started kind of high and right. I shot a few three shot strings, clicked a few clicks, until the last three were in the X-ring. I called it good.

Going free hand allowed me to express my true self again. :ROFLMAO:

OK, it's time to "aim small, miss small" again. I got a nice, tight 10-shot group for once.

AP1GczOZFULHKWXh_F3lCqSgD4QQD8HT2_gnPHTuL_5_TFEkgsouU6kCC266iXD4KiD0U02v7y8Q8nJPdhg9kJ4FLcg-FAO-dPf4-Ykp2RI2l5V4w9GHokjs8Rgl78acVhdqWfOTmDsyxVQDGCNpMhKCwTp4iw=w1651-h929-s-no

Now that's what I'm working toward, with consistency. Glam shot?

AP1GczOsT4UL-K478NFewpi8TSdUlgC41L0Ao4kNgZGNWGaextxHv75FFVvQH0BNFbYh5Y3vnmUN2ufynLD56CQU2HVCNccuZvGnizOGbuC1KQ2AVi-5ChkEJr0xd_JRLkXLWLaPqMaob0_krDZAvMHWi3b7gg=w1651-h929-s-no

Now we'll go back to the Echelon using the same target setup. I shot a couple of these targets, using a 20-shot string, and both looked about the same, like this.

AP1GczPyDSJkVovJ5hhab14KCYsAqyEEm_wR04O7IiDsoJFb81oEr9PeILxH-5y5hsZZ02yfcR5_ej7HHcVcQMOqF1YGEAYHnkOvF42D7wED9dNcJ6gkbIkr3pGqsg0f-tokLJztAeNHKoehu35y7_mAdPVjjA=w1651-h929-s-no

I seem to be pulling the muzzle just a bit low-left unless I'm really paying attention. Maybe after a few hundred more rounds the trigger will break a little easier and I won't pull it off. For the last 10 rounds through the Echelon, I sent the target out to 15 yards. It came back like this.

AP1GczMw50bQBgogjxnWWrxPHZxbhcegoAuec_1R-m_tUr_PmY3JCU6p8QmylXxSQzRkahwWV8arzhh2FS5Z8t10bmXfAO7THmhsVEkvMw-xLV1w_YThv6Y6MMmX_kRYPHyPRUEQAv7t6uhKsbOwWmOjDAlIkA=w1651-h929-s-no

Yeah, one real bad low-left flyer. I gotta get my trigger finger to behave and tighten up my off hand a bit. I'm going to stick on another 8" reactive circle, send it back out to 15 yards, and put 20 rounds on it with the Mod.3.

AP1GczOLxgiBYD7hYmImZthrMyi5SXcp2cTltKddvbnyyU3Zy7QJtQ-chKsYXJJW2e6-aLm_weDrqX1btAjuRZeHvrgVyWX1G8EjuLfZXTUEsjZ21rP-bArJIt1S_Q1NXuDFOu-n4xjsCnyqTwJnM4uzsoxpzQ=w1651-h929-s-no

You can tell when I'm not paying attention and shooting too fast. They start going low. Now I'm going to send my favorite target out to 10 yards and put my last 30 rounds through it. I'm hoping for a raggedy hole.

AP1GczN1wsifMJDVPw58xaOg9vTi2BDRc-_cy0K25SM4yDR2MfKWX1stk_6dl1-pYeDnFiMksol8NA2fsB0BoSOkezTXoWFaKshg5EnfbgjIwlR5oqso-exexlrErb-nqsfgtjgp6vawr9VPcA5URkaK1nh8zg=w1651-h929-s-no

Well, not exactly the big raggedy hole I was hoping for, but not too terrible. One of these days I'm going to shoot out that big red bullseye in the middle. ;) I'm out of ammo so I packed up my kit. I was the only one left on the range. But as I was checking out a couple other guys came in.

Checking out the photo op corner....Oh yeah, I thought this was apropos.

Now I'm going to clean these two filthy pistols and shoot something different next time. I haven't decided what. What do you think? I will revisit my optics at a later date. I'm still not where I want to be with them. But that's OK, I love to practice. ;) Take care, everyone.

Hi,

What's all that brown stuff? 🤔
I'm going skiing this weekend again at Lutsen (MN) on the north shore.

Good range day!

Yeah, we haven't gotten a lot of snow this winter, and none lately. It's all melted and now it's just wet and cold. Thanks for dropping by and sharing my fun. ;)

Hi,

Nice shooting!

Low left is recoil anticipation btw.

You're exactly right. Sometimes, when I'm really taking my time lining up the shot, trying my best to keep the dot on the bullseye, I will squeeeeeze the trigger reeeeeaaaally slowly, and just as I expect the trigger to break I will flinch. But then I'm OK. Since I've already flinched, I can take that shot and it will land where I want.

It's almost like I overthink it sometimes. When my mind is not worried about the recoil - after all, the gun is not going to jump out of my hand - I can pull the trigger straight back without upsetting the sight picture. Other times I try too hard instead of letting the fundamentals happen naturally, instinctively.

Well, that's enough pontificating and self-absorbed introspection. I'll keep practicing until I get it right.

Hi,

Good chootin agent, man you secret agent fellers shoot all night too.

Ha! No, I'm not up all night shooting. Sometimes I have to post my targets late at night after Mrs. BassCliff has gone to bed. It's too bad there are no 24 hour range facilities around here, or else I would shoot all night long. ;)

Hi,

Good shooting Cliff!

I appreciate that. I had a few good targets. I think it's going to take a few more sessions until I really get a handle on these optics. I know I'm a bit hard on myself, but I gotta tell ya. I was looking at the guys in the lanes next to me, shooting bigger targets at closer range, and their groups were bigger than a basketball, all over the target. It made me think, I ain't so bad.

But last week the guy next to me was putting 50 rounds inside of a quarter at the same 10 yards I was shooting at. That made me think, I need more practice! Granted, he was shooting a competition target .22 pistol, but still. Maybe I'll take a couple of .22 pistols out next week.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff
