Hello friends,
Since I was a good boy and got all my chores done this week already, Wednesday was range day. I wanted to have some more fun with my new Henry Lever .22, especially since I haven't cleaned it up from the last range trip. I'll get it good and dirty today. I also brought one of my .45 pistols. Seems I haven't shot my XD45 Mod2 Tactical for a while. I'd forgotten how much I like this pistol. I'm glad I pulled it out of the safe. I traveled to the newer facility today and procured lane #3, my favorite.
Just to help these old eyes, I stuck a yellow sticker on the X ring and sent the B-8 out to 10 yards to start. I brought just 50 rounds of 230 grain .45ACP from Freedom Munitions, sister company of LAX Ammunition. Their house brand is great, and particularly well-priced when you take advantage of their free shipping specials.
Yes, this Mod2 has a Grip Zone. I knew you wanted to see it up close.
As usual, I used 10-shot strings on my targets. The first one came back like this.
Hey, I don't think that's too bad considering it's been a while since I've practiced with this pistol. The trigger on this one seems a little mushy. But it's a good mush, very smooth right up until it fires. It allows me to keep the sights aligned. Here's target #2, a little better.
For target #3 I had fun with a reactive 8" sticker.
OK, the vertical spread on that target was a little more than I was hoping for. But I sent the next two targets out to 15 yards anyway. As you know, I've started practicing my pistols with a little greater distance.
I was a little disappointed with the first 15 yard target.
Yeah, too many out of the black. OK, one more target at 15 yards. I still shot this one pretty quickly but paid more attention to fundamentals.
That's a little better. If you gimme a line break there's only one out of the black and five in the 10-ring. Is that good enough for a glam shot? Maybe.
Now I'm going to try and finish tuning up my new little lever gun. Henry Small Game, 20" octagonal barrel, .22S,L,LR, with peep sight.
Again, I used my range backpack for a rest and sent the target out to 25 yards. I felt a little cheated because the display said only 74 feet.
I shot a few mag tubes and tweaked in between. This was the last 16 rounds.
I have adjusted the rear sight as far as it will go to compensate for the grouping high and left. IOW, I've moved the rear sight as low and to the right as possible. I suppose I can adjust my hold to get a more centered group. Or do I need a different cheek weld? Or do I need new eyes? I'm not sure if I can, or should, try to adjust the front sight. Is this something for a gunsmith to fix? Should I hold the bead off center in the rear peep sight? A little higher than center?
Anyway, I feel like I'm very close with this little rifle. Maybe I'll just get a cheap scope for it. But I'd hate to ruin the classic looks.
Well, I've had all the fun in the time allotted. The range is closing early for a special event. I packed up my kit and said good bye.
After the thunderstorm early this morning it cleared up and temps rose to 95°. It was a nice day, just warm and humid. The corn loves it.
I might have a little more adjustment left on the rear sight, snug it up real tight toward the extremes, and see if that helps at all. Any other suggestions? The Henry lever sure is a fun plinker. I can't wait to teach the grandkids.
Thanks for hanging out with me. Blessings to all.
Thank you for your indulgence,
