Bless me Armory Life Forum for I have sinned,
It's been three weeks since my last range report. I have defiled myself low and left many times but have seen the error of my ways. My targets were not worthy of display in public and I was ashamed. However, I feel like I have redeemed myself at this week's practice session.
On the afternoon of June 18 I attended the elder house of Our Lady of Perpetual Bang, to worship at 10 yards.
Alas, I could not align my XD9 sights with those of the Prince of Bullseye. My efforts were unworthy. After many targets sacrificed in warm up, these were the best I had to offer.
The other targets, especially the 10-10-10 drills, were evil and despicable. They shall henceforth be tossed into the pit, to be recycled and redeemed into paper used to clean one's nether regions.
The following week, on 5/24/23, the demons of flinch were again hard at work distracting this lowly old noob. I was so distraught I forgot to print more B-8 centers and had to use a different target. I was hoping against hope that this would help me focus, but to no avail.
So today on 5/31/23, I attended the temple of Our Lady of Perpetual Bang, the Younger, and was ushered to lane #12. (My favorite lane!) I could feel a burden being lifted from my shoulders.
The sacraments for today's ceremony included 100 rounds of 9mm WWB and 50 rounds of LAX Ammo .45ACP to offer through my XD9 and Garrison 1911.
The spirit of John Moses Browning whispered to me, "My son, start with the 1911." I complied and genuflected my cold 10-10-10 drill with the Garrison.
I was rewarded with a score of 91 under par time. The spirit of JMB said to me, "You didn't suck, my good and faithful servant." I continued the ceremony without the timer using reactive targets. Here I offered 5 round on each circle. Forgive me for getting only two on each of the smaller circles.
During my time in the lane, brass kept falling on my head and shoulders like manna from heaven. It wasn't just one or two, but a whole magazine of empty hot cartridges were raining down on me. I took pause and noticed a freakishly tall worshiper in the lane next to me. So be it. This must be part of my penance.
As his brass flew over the ballistic wall showering me with warm emptiness, I continued to offer my own lead downrange through paper. Again trying 5 hits on each circle, I managed to get three hits each on the smaller bulls.
After 50 rounds of .45 it was now time to offer another 100 round range pack of 9mm WWB. Thank JMB and Mr. Winchester that there was only one single failure to eject in this box, and it happened on the first 10-10-10 drill I tried with my XD9. I did only one more timed drill this session due to the other parishioners paying their penance.
I though it would please the spirit of JMB if I were to "aim small, miss small" so I used this 2" circle grid target for a few magazines.
I used a few 4" reactive bulls. These old eyes can see the contrast better. I sill let one get outside of the target. Forgive me.
The flyer demon is still cursing me. Another one outside of the 4" circle.
I'm trying my best to resist the flyer demon. It's still got its hooks in me.
The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. I let two flyers out of the 4" circle. I pray you'll give me the line break on the hit with the arrow.
We are nearing the end of this session. I'll put up one more 8" reactive circle and try to pay homage to the spirit of JMB.
I feel like I've chased away the demons of flinch and flyer. Let's pass the plate one more time before the benediction. I can cover all thes hits with a 4" reactive circle and try again.
Sweet Moses Browning! I let two get outside of the 4" circle. Still, this practice session was much better than the slump I was in the previous two weeks. My countenance has been encouraged and faith in my sight picture has been restored. Thank you all for your warm thoughts and good wishes. I hope to improve on this performance next week after cleansing these unclean guns and taking part in dry fire duty in my basement range chapel. Please keep me in your prayers.
May your stance, grip, sight picture, and trigger pull be upright and straight.
