Range Report: SHO-WHO, Mediocre Mediocrity, 2/25/26

Hey gang,

I made a quick trip to the range today to practice something other than plain marksmanship with my two new optics pistols. The older facility wasn't too busy so I got my favorite lane.

For the fifth week in a row I'm working with the XD9 Mod3 and Echelon 4.5F Comp, both with Holosun 507C-X2 green dots. I shot 50 rounds of S&B 124 grain through both.

For my first target the plan was to alternate hits between the center card and the head card, target transitions. The first 10 rounds didn't go so well, shooting cold and fast.

Yeah, really bad. One hit missed the silhouette entirely. So I sent the target back downrange and slowed down just a little. I got five hits on or close to each card.

I think I'm better at this with iron sights but I want to be as good with my optics too. More practice! I sped up a little with the next target and fell apart again.

I guess they were all on the silhouette this time. Maybe I would've done some damage. For this last Echelon target I stuck on a reactive circle. I had 20 rounds left in two magazines. I picked up the pace a little, put 10 rounds on center, mag change, five more on center, and the last five on the head card. It's getting better.

It's not really good enough for a glam shot, but what the heck?

Next I'll work with the Mod3 for 50 rounds. Since I'll be working this into my regular EDC rotation, today I wanted to practice single hand shooting, SHO and WHO. I've done very little strong-hand-only or weak-hand-only with my optics. It's really a different beast. I'm pretty good at presenting with two hands and having the dot "right there". But not so much when using single hand.

My first exercise involved shooting five rounds with my right hand, transition the gun to my left hand, five more rounds. I did this three times for 30 hits on this first target. Yeah, it's kind of all over.

I think most of those center hits are from my left hand. I'll show you why in a minute. The next-to-last target was 10 hits on a new B-8 center using SHO, my right.

The only good thing you can say about this target is that most of the hits made it on the paper, with three just off to the right. Now, here's 10 hits using my left, weak hand only.

A lot of times I don't shoot that well with both hands. But I'll take it. I think this one deserves a glam shot.

All this proves is that I need more single hand practice with my optics pistols. I doubt if I'll ever carry the Echelon but I will the Mod3. I'll work more in my basement laser range to make sure the dot is "there" when I present with one hand. I thought I had a pretty good session last week but now I know I've got some more work to do. Thanks for putting up with me! You guys are the best.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff
