Friends, Romans, Countrymen, lend me your eyes,
I got most of my chores done on Monday and Tuesday. I still have my laundry to do but today was range day, especially because I wanted to try out my new Condition 1 case. I took my three EDC pistols and loaded up 10 cartridges of 115 grain Blazer in five magazines for each.
I found a few old boxes of 115 grain and decided to shoot some. I still have two or three boxes of 115 grain left. I usually shoot 124 grain because that's the weight of my SD ammo. But I digress. This case is sweet! Granted, I did not fully load it up today but it was quite portable and not heavy at all with three pistols and 150 rounds loaded in 15 magazines.
I arrived at the range at a good time, mid-afternoon. I had the whole place to myself for my entire session.
There were a couple of shooters on the other side of that door, where the "short range" is located. Maximum range is about 18 feet and it's used mostly for holster practice and running CQB drills. Newer shooters will use the short range because the long range has a minimum distance of 30 feet. Since I had the whole place to myself, guess what? I got my favorite lane.
I had a pretty simple plan today, 50 rounds through three pistols at 10 yards and 15 yards. All three ran flawlessly today. I started with the VP9.
Since I was all alone, I decided to pull out my timer and run a "cold" 10-10-10 drill (no warm-up). It's been a while. Here we go, 10 shots at 10 yards in less than 10 seconds. My target came back like this.
Believe it or not, that is a passing score. Even with the 2 second penalty (for two hits outside the black) I scored 90 points in under 10 seconds. I shot that one pretty fast (for me). Maybe I can slow down just a little, still make par time, and get a better score. Maybe next time. I did take video of this 10-10-10 drill. Maybe I'll post it once it's edited and uploaded. For now, let's move on to some good old fashioned marksmanship. The rest of the session had one or two seconds between shots for the most part. Here's target #2 with the VP9.
Yep, slow down a little and my accuracy improves a little. I'm really loving this pistol since the new SpeedSights were installed. Here's target #3.
I guess I shot this one a little faster, hence the flyer. Moving on to target #4.
I thought I had slowed down my pace enough but I still let one go high. Oh well. The last 10-shot string will be on a target at 15 yards.
Looky there, I got half the shots in the 10 ring. Boo on me for letting those three hits go low. I need to slow down a little more at this distance until I get good like @SimonRL.
Next up will be my original XD9 4" Service Pistol. This was my first purchase in the modern era of Old Noob target/defensive shooting. I still enjoy shooting this unit.
We're just gonna keep taping on new B-8 centers and have our way with them. Here's target #1.
Only three hits out of the black, but all in the 8-ring if you give me generous line breaks. Target #2 looks a little better.
Six hits in the 10-ring but I still left one hanging in the 8-ring. Where did I leave my consistency? Is it on target #3?
Well, not really. I guess you could say I'm consistently putting hits in the 8-ring. Bleh. Let me see if I can find my mojo and put it on target #4.
I guess my mojo is just a little bit high, but at least it's all in the black. For target #5 we're going to send it out to 15 yards again and see what damage we can do. Oops! I can't send the target out. It seems I've broken something. I didn't shoot it, it just broke. I alerted the staff and moved over to lane #9, my favorite lane.
The last XD9 target came back from 15 yards like this.
Interesting that this group is also a little high. Hmm. Only three hits out of the black. That's not bad for this Old Noob.
And last, but not least, is my XD9 Mod.3 with the Holosun optic. But I'm going to finish up this session in the next post. Otherwise there will be too many pictures. I like pictures.
Be right back!
Thank you for your indulgence,
