Too much magnification can be a waste of money and too little an impediment to accuracy. What you need to know is how to select a rifle scope based on your magnification needs.

It's pretty hard to justify a scope of any power on a 30/30, especially the old cowboy guns .... like the Mod94 and/or the Marlin 336's. However on a good bolt gun, it can sometimes be a benefit in a reasonable power. But like Hans, I see no need for anything approaching 20X. (y)(y)(y)
 
You have too see the whites in their eyes! Any gun I max at 300 yards end up with a red dot, but varies by cartridge, barrel length, bullet weight and go from there.
