Jump in the BTTF DeLorean for the S&W Model 53-2 and the .22 Jet.

Smith & Wesson Model 53-2 Magnum Jet is one of the biggest flops in revolver history. S&W made it in 1972 for their experimental .22 Jet cartridge – a bottlenecked rimfire round that was supposed to give you .22 Hornet rifle performance in a handgun.

The .22 Jet looked great on paper. Bottlenecked case, high powder charges, velocities pushing 2,000 fps. S&W wanted something between regular rimfire and centerfire cartridges.



The Model 53 came with two cylinders. One for the .22 Jet, another with inserts for .22 Long Rifle when the Jet rounds inevitably get screwed up.

Interesting concept. I remember when they first came out. “Latest/Greatest”. If they could have got past the issues they’d have really taken off-decades before a 5.7 x 28 was ever dreamed of
