SA 1911 Garrison-Failure To Feed

tbiede

Alpha
Hi everyone. I am new to this forum. I just, this past Friday, picked up my new Springfield Armory 1911 Garrison .45 ACP. When I bought the gun, I also bought an extra SA 1911 7 RD clip and a 50 round box of Blazer FMJ .45 Auto in Brass. I went to the range yesterday to try my new firearm. I loaded 7 rounds in each of the 2 magazines that I had and proceeded to shoot. I got a failure to fire about halfway through the mag. I cleared it and the rest of the first clip was fine. I then put the 2nd mag. in and proceeded to shoot at the target. Again, about halfway through, I got a failure to feed. I cleared it also, and the rest of the clip was fine. I then reloaded the 2 magazines, only putting 6 rounds in each. I put the first magazine in and pulled the slide back and, again, got a failure to feed. I had a hard time clearing this jam, but was finally able to and then cycled through the rest of the magazine with no issues. I had 1 more failure to feed in this 50 round box and then I was done. I wanted to get home to call Springfield Armory asap. I talked a woman from SA and she set me up with sending the firearm back to get it looked at. She was great!
I have 8 or so different firearms from different manufacturers and have only had 1 failure to feed happen with 1 of my firearms.

Does anyone have a guess as to what may be wrong with this firearm?

(Btw, I dropped the firearm off at FedEx this morning. I will let you all know what the problem with it is when I find out.)

Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

Did you clean and lube it before you shot it, all new guns need to have this done, the oil that’s on a new gun is just for corrosion protection, also most 1911’s need to run kinda wet till they are broke in

I did not clean and lube it before I shot it. The guy at the range mentioned something about this, but I did not see anything in the manual about this. My Smith and Wesson M&P15 Sport II does mention this in the manual. When I talked to the woman at Springfield Armory about this, she said that it shouldn't have mattered since they test fire the gun before they sell it. I did notice oil on the firearm when I bought it, though.

Well every time you call a magazine a clip uiu will get a jam……JK

Seriously though it could be an extractor issue but to rule that out try some Wilson’s.

Usually SA mags are good to go but I have never messed with the 7 rd. The 8rd that come with the operator and Wilson or Chip McCormick are all I use

Good luck

I use Wilson or Ed Brown mags but I have always done the cleaning and lube but because I use hollow points I did a fluff and buff on my 1911s and I got in the habit of doing that since the 50s. My son's 10mm had failure to feed and I reminded him of what I did because of my old gunsmith friend. I have not had a new gun in many a year so I have no clue about brand new firearms.

as mentioned...no matter what you were told on the phone, when ever you buy a NEW gun, do a field strip, clean and lube the gun..YES, 1911's run better when "wetter", meaning do not be shy with the lube oil.....always making sure the barrel, and hood get lubed completely, as well as the barrel's link, where the slide lock runs thru it.

now, as far as "lube oil", DO NOT get caught up in which brand is best..use what you have...case closed on lube oils.

as far as magazines go, for the prices, i always go 8 round Magazines....never 7 rounds...

i buy, Wilson Combat, Night Hawk, Mec Gar, and Metalform...i do not need to spend moo-koo dollars for some of the others

and yes, proper reassembly, and "up to" 500 rounds run thru the gun for a proper break-in period...

my 2 Dan Wessons, in the manual said 500 rounds.

clean and lube that 1911 after EVERY range visit

as for ammo, i reload.....if i follow the OAL (over all Length) of the cartridge, from the reloading books, NONE of my 1911's will shoot....as they are WAY TOO SHORT, and cannot get up the feed ramp.

so, i have to reload and go to "near OAL" of factory ammo, and that is about 1.172 OAL..

so what i am saying is..."SOME factory ammo" may be a wee-bit too short in THAT box or boxes that you bought.....no factory ammo is perfect....especially Blazer, i have found.

for the record, when i do shoot factory made, i shoot the following brands, Fiocchi, S&B, Federal, Winchester, Armscor, and have NO issues.............Blazer has always been (for me) hit or miss on 45 ACP..

but Blazer has been great for 9mm, 38 special, 357 mag, when i shoot those calibers.

no telling what brand of ammo S/A will test shoot your gun with.........

Thank you! Lots of great information from you. I am very anal and always clean all of my firearms after use.

search for "proper lubrication of a 1911"

way too many videos, some do a great job, some are half-azzed..you will find the differences right away
I wanted to break down the 1911 before I shot it-my first 1911 that I owned. The video, in the manual, on the Springfield Armory website, shows the takedown of a 1911, but not the Garrison. I did manage to find a video online of the takedown of the 1911 Garrison, though.

Hello!

And welcome to the forum! I really enjoy my Garrison. Sorry you're having some minor issues with yours. If you're an experienced shooter, I'm sure you are not "limp wristing" your shots. I have Chip McCormick 10-round magazines for my Garrison, always work. I think I have some regular ProMag 7-round units that also work.

I'm sure that SA will take good care of you since you've sent it back to the factory for a tune up.

As others have said, a brand new gun may require a short "break in" period, 200-500 rounds. A brand new gun should be field stripped, cleaned, and lubed before firing. But I will admit that I have shot a brand new gun before cleaning. Sometimes I want to play with it as soon as I pick it up. ;)

Not all ammo is created equal. Some pistols run better or worse with certain ammo. You'll have to try a few different brands to find out which yours likes and dislikes. I shoot a lot of 9mm Blazer Brass but not .45ACP. My favorite .45ACP comes from LAX Ammo (Freedom Munitions): https://freedommunitions.com/products/lax-45-auto-230-gr-rn-new-small-primer-50ct

It's also a great price when you can take advantage of their free shipping, or $5 flat rate. I just bought a case last week, 32 cents a round - delivered to my door.

Everyone has their favorite cleaning/lube products, so I'll let you know mine too...just a recommendation: https://www.shooterlube.com/

What else do you shoot? I'm a self-professed Springfield fan boy but have a few others. Glad you could join us.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Thank you for your reply. My first firearm purchase was a Ruger 9mm back in the early 90s. I think it’s a P89? Never had a problem with it. I also have a little plinker, Browning Buckmark in .22. Before I bought the SA 1911 Garrison, my last purchase was a Ruger Security 9, in 9mm, for CC. I also have a Sig Sauer 9mm, which I gave to my son. The Sig Sauer was the only firearm that I owned that ever had a failure to feed.

they are all basically the same.......except the S/A Emissary......that has Bull barrel....

totally different take down method....

other wise, Colt, RIA, Tisus, Wilson, S/A, S&W, etc,etc...same procedures

I’m glad that I got the SA 1911. I was actually thinking about buying the Ruger Vaquero in .45 or .357. I do not own any revolvers and it would have been my first one. I also didn’t own any 1911s either.
