How Are Shotgun Shells Classified?

Shotgun shells are classified by gauges. Unlike other types of ammunition, the gauging system used with shotgun shells does not correspond to any linear measurement.

Interesting short article. I always knew all the gauge sizes but never really thought about what it meant or where it came from.

KF,
No 10 ga here, just 3 12ga and my granddad's 1940 H&R 20ga single shot. But I can imagine it's like shooting a cannon from your shoulder ... ouch! 🤯

The Rem 870 was my first new shotgun in 1985, thousands of shots thru this gun shooting trap, sporting clays and hunting. I was very accurate with this gun. It felt like it just knocked anything I was looking at out of the air. It now sits at the ready with the short barrel on it loaded with 3" magnum 00 buck.

Picked up a used Rem 1187 which I never really liked, it was much heavier and slower swinging to a target.

Wife bought me a new Stoeger over/under around 2000 which I used, and it increased my scores, in my sporting clays days.

That was some good times but I don't do much with them any more.
