Should Gun Owners Be Worried About The DOJ’s Proposed ATF/DEA Merger?

"Of course, a plan to combine the agencies brings up some very important questions that haven’t been answered at this time. First, who would control the agency? Also, what might they use the authority for, not just now but under subsequent administrations?"

So my one important question is how will this larger agency behave if conservatives no longer control the White House?

Conceptually, to combat cartels and FTOs it's a good idea. Practically, as the article notes, it apparently increases money, people, assets, etc. Efficiency is not gained by increases; it's realized by reduced budgets, people and focused priorities. DEA and ATF are not alone in this. I've seen military commands "merge" and not one person, command slot, or desk goes away. The intel community still has 17 agencies and each has a set of priorities and duplicative budgets in some cases to outdo the other guy rather than protect our nation. To streamline any gov't activity reduce the money first, then have said activity really prioritize missions instead of developing some cryptic mission set.

Federal Gun Laws , and Firearms Industry Regulations EXIST .

* Somebody * is going to Regulate and Enforce . Nobody is going to snap their fingers and make every Firearms Regulation.and Law disappear . Sure , l can channel my libertarian half , and wish it were so , but it's not realistic to expect it to happen .

So , hypothetically , who would " We" want to do it ? Serious question .

Yup . ATF is worst of all possible , being both Incompetent and Overzealous in the wrong directions .

FBI ? Massively overpoliticized , believes too many of their own press releases about their Criminal Investagative proqress , and no experience in smooth Regulatory administering .

Department of Commerace ? Flip side . Lots of Regulatory , but they'd be starting from scratch and figuring it out as they go on the criminal side . ( Not impossible to get to speed , but it's uphill .)

DEA at least has long experience of both Industry Regulation ,and Criminal Investigation .

Shrug .

That's one of those things that'll look good on paper but the turf wars will just multiply the disfunctionality.

Which probably wouldn't matter to anyone just trying to survive at their pay level...

will just multiply the disfunctionality.

Is that Good or Bad ?

Short of the Pipe Dream of having no laws or regulations of any firearms or firearms related things , what type of Enforcement is considered " desireable " ?

Anything that replaces the current ATF will be more competent .

" Legitimate " ATF major investigations have usually had signifigant overlap with with drugs ( street gangs and OMC s ) . Just that for ATF drugs are colateral to Furearms charges , and for DEA , guns are colateral to the CDS trafficking .

In the scenario that , DEA would treat Firearms enforcement as a multiplier in countering Drug organizations , they might well place little priority on gun industry and gun owners who aren't engaging in drug distribution .

Anything that replaces the current ATF will be more competent .
Sometimes better the devil you know.
Just to be a contrarian ;)
JMHO. Whats really needed is:
1 Remove all "rule" making authority from every agency/department. If it is necessary to be a rule, then it is necessary enough to be a law, and needs to go through our elected representatives. OH, and no "omnibus" rules package, let each stand or fail on its own merit. As an added bonus it would give them lazy SOBs in congress something to do besides hold do nothing hearings, investigations and flying off on "fact finding junkets". AKA taxpayer funded vacations.
2 Enforce agencies to stay in their own lain. I.E. Guns are not a disease. The CDC should not be doing any study on "gun violence". Anyone straying over the line, fired, lose all benefits and entitlement, like retirement and lifetime health care etc.
3 disband 90+% of the SWAT Teams. The Dept of hugs and kisses has no need for a place for the tactacool kids to go and play. If on the off chance the DHK needs a swat team, go through the DOJ and they can be lent one.
4 Every month every Gov. employee is required, on their own time an expense, to take a 8hr class reminding them that they are Servants of the people not Lord and Master!
5 don't like it? Go get a real job in the dreaded private sector.
FYI. From a retired public sector employee.

Both GOA and NSSF are against this potential merger and in GOA's case, asked supporters/members to send a pre-written letter to the White house which I did. I got back a White House response in a form letter basically touting all Trump accomplished to date, continuing goals promised during the election but nothing that actually address the concerns of this potential merger (not really surprising).

Below is a link to a Guns.com short article that highlighted some of the concerns that the GOA form letter addressed, such as:

"The White House just officially proposed merging ATF & DEA. Just imagine:

👎3x ATF budget
👎4x ATF tactical units
👎+10,000 new employees
👎reduced oversight & accountability

Merging is NOT abolishing, it's a DANGEROUS Trojan Horse."
