Best known in the West as the Freedom Fighter or Tiger II in later models, the Northrop F-5 in Taiwan, the Republic of China, will always be remembered as the Tiger, a 60-year love affair that ended last week.

While the F-5 continues to be flown by 15 other countries, most in Latin America and Asia, as the U.S. Navy has been big on keeping F-5s in an aggressor role, with the Marines recently acquiring 22 retired F-5E/Fs from the Swiss Air Force, we may see the final RoCAF F-5s in Stateside service.

I worked with four squadrons that flew them when I was in the Canadian military. I worked actively with them at CFB Cold Lake, in Alberta. When I came back from Germany I got a job at an aircraft plant where we were completely stripping down the plane to the bare fuselage. We completely strengthened and rebuilt the the fuselage and upgraded the avionics package. My job was the egress and safety systems. Everything was stripped down and rebuilt brand new. I learned so much about sheet metal work at that place..

Okay, I'll shut up now. I just escaped for a bit. I really enjoyed that part of my life. :)

Canada has a military?

/jk

Their F-35s aren’t far from going into production, assuming Canada doesn’t become New Minnesota or some such thing. Then they’ll probably go to Turkey to replace the ones we decided not to give them.
