Springfield 1884 Trap Door

I have a Springfield 1884 with all the correct markings, but it has a number 32 stamped on top of the breechblock.
I am trying to figure out if there is a significance to this stamping. Could the 32 be a rack number? Regiment number?
SN: 464962. Any ideas?

Possibly the unit, the rack numbers I’ve seen have looked more temporary.
