The .44-40 Winchester: History and Performance

Winchester 1873's came in the following calibers: 22 short, 22 long, 32-20. 38-40, and 44-40. I believe Colt also made handguns in those calibers as well. I have a 73 that was made in 1890 in 38-40 caliber. It shoots well using cowboy loads from Georgia Arms.
 
That is a great article, but the 44-40 can reach out a bit further than 100 yards with great accuracy and power when loaded correctly...and plenty safe for the weak actions.
