Originally supposed to be called the Remington Model 555 and nicknamed the “Bearcat,” but Remington quickly realized that Ruger had introduced a gun with the same name in 1958.

I dropped many squirrels with my 66. It was the version they called Apache Black with a black stock, white accents, and nickel metal. I thought it was the most beautiful rifle in the world at the time. My hunting buddy called it the pimp rifle.

The retail price in January 1959 was $49.95.
In 1959, Remington still had two other autoloading .22s on the market: the older Model 550-1 and the newer Model 552. The Model 550-1 sold for $46.75, and the Model 552 sold for $52.25. Therefore, the Nylon 66 acted as a middle of the line gun at $49.95.

The end result was that it became the most successful .22-cal. rifle Remington has ever made, with total production of more than 1,000,000 by 1991 when the Nylon 66 was discontinued.

I passed my DNR hunters' safety class shooting this rifle in 1980....good memory...it was a shooting range in the basement of a grade school, if you can imagine that now...
Knew lots of rural texans that would either dove hunt or deer hunt from schools in the ‘80-90s

A Few principals back then used the skybox of the football stands as the deer blind 🤣
