24 Years Old and Getting Better By The Day – The Heckler & Koch MP7

The Heckler & Koch MP7 stands as an advanced compact Personal Defense Weapon (PDW). Heckler & Koch launched the MP7 in 2001 in response to NATO’s demand. They wanted a weapon that could penetrate body armor while remaining compact and lightweight. This was ideal for vehicle crews, support personnel, and special operations forces. This innovative firearm blurs the line between a submachine gun and a carbine.

Lee has reloading dies available.

It seems it uses a 0.183 diameter bullet, most 17 cal are 0.172 20 / 5mm are like 0.204
it's either a .177 or .178 on the lands and .182-3 in the grooves, so no 17calor 20cals will work unless necked to 17 or 20cal and then bored to the same cal. i've thought about necking it up or down and having 1 chambered to match.

these 3 are in the run as all 3 have different task/jobs which couldn't go wrong with either of the 3.

the 9x25 is the only 1 listing case capacity, so can't say much about the other 2, other than they'll have higher bc's although the 5.7 has the lowest energies. that makes the dillon and the hk a good/better choice(S)

if looking for a short yardage (less than 100 yards) firearm for outdoors to me the hk would be the better choice. when i get the time to have custom dies made for re-necking the hk to either 17 and/or 20cal i'll get a barrel chambered to match. maybe do both (17 &20cals) to test against all 3 (necked down 17cal, necked up 20cal & the original hk round). with quick load i can do computerized testing by changing the calibers used.

I gotta confess, I just don’t get the whole PDF weapon using an itty bitty bullet. Neither the HK nor the FN rounds puts down more than 1/3 the energy of an old Carbine, caliber 30 M1, and they use a weapon significantly heavier to do it. We had a first class “PDF” in the 1940’s😏

it wasn't designed to have lots of energy, but designed for body armor defeat. lightweight compact high capacity weapon(s). more of a close range weapon than a long range weapon use. for those 100 yard use type weapons there are better firearms designed for that distance and beyond. high velocity small caliber can defeat armor easier than a larger blunt heavier object/bullet can (given specific level (s) of armor).

Understand, still defeating armor alone is no guarantee of stopping whoever is behind it. I suspect these popgun rounds will expend a fair bit of whatever minimal energy they have at point of impact. Me? I’d a lot rather nail ‘em with a 30-06 or .308 AP. Makes no sense to engage an armed enemy with a round that is not even legal to try and take a deer with. If it can’t consistently drop Bambi why in heaven would you select it to stop anything that is trying to kill You😳.

many have limitations on how far and purpose of round. can't really have a "1 gun fits all" type, but some come close. and not all areas of the body is armored, so some non-ap rounds work just fine

I’d think something like a light carbine in a round similar to the FK7.5 would be the ticket. Mild recoil from a carbine, with the right powder it’s throw that 95 grain copper pill 2300+ fps ( ir gets 2000 fps from the pistol) and would deliver 1000+ foe. That in a 5 lb magazine fed carbine would be impressive

Well, 5.56 has been the military standard for a pretty long time now. Seems fairly effective to me.

These aren’t designed for front line troops; more for support and/or close action/CQB.

And a whole bunch of holes, really fast, tend to work just as well or even better than just bigger one.

Just remember that the military tends to “pin” or fix an enemy with high volumes of fire so they can be hammered with artillery or air strikes. Also, the 5.56 has 3x the energy of these new PDF rounds.

Just remember that it takes 10 hits from these little guys to get the same energy on target as one 7.62😏. I sincerely hope I never, ever, have to use a firearm for self defense, but if I do, I want the problem resolved right know with one good hit. YMMV

So what?

Energy schmenergy…energy doesn’t kill.

Holes that bleed do.

I dunno, energy from one good hit sure seems to drop deer, elk, and moose pretty well. Go with what works for you. Me? I continue my search for the ultimate cow that’ll carry like a 365 Sig, hit like a 29 Smith and recoil like a Single Six. Don’t think I’ll find it but the search continues😊

You think it’s the energy or the hole in the heart or lungs ?

Ted Nugent has demonstrated the ability to instantly put one to sleep with a well placed arrow traveling about 300 fps.

@Bassbob covered it with the arrow comparison.

Energy really doesn’t matter, as long as you can hit vitals.

True, and I saw Howard Hill stop a charging elephant with a bow (worth watching👍). And I know back in the 1950’s a lady in Alaska killed a huge bear with a single .22 LR through the ear. Nevertheless, I’d still rather have a nice 45.70😊.i know the lil guns are popular. Got a buddy who loves the 5,7 in a pistol. Not my thing, but I’m sure glad we all get to make our own choices👍
