I know I've been off here a few months, life creeps up on us sometimes, and it's been an absolute madhouse around here trying to get my shop up and running. I've even had to take a break from the gym (which I love), but a happy sacrifice to have time with my boy who's starting shooting sports through a 4H-style program through school. He's a 7th grader now. Where does the time go?
Anyways, I wanted to share with you all a laugh that I had involving my own lack of attention. Hopefully you'll laugh as hard as I did (after my appropriate use of "motherf**ker" of course).
So, I've recently been doing a custom 6.5 Grendel build with the intention of raffling it off at my shop, and I got to the point where it was time to mount a stock. I decided to go with the LuthAR MBA-1 adjustable (full kit) that comes with its own buffer system. Because it's my first 6.5 Grendel build, I have occasionally reached out to manufacturers to have questions answered. In this case, I asked LuthAR if I would need the .308 kit or the 5.56 kit for this job.
SIDE NOTE: Shout out to Paul at LuthAR. He's a character and we got to share some laughs about our boys and how easy it is to make mistakes. I love that guy, and his candor alone made me move LuthAR up on my list of parts.
So, getting back to the story, I reached out to LuthAR asking that question and Paul emailed me back telling me I needed the 5.56 kit. I thanked him and moved on. A few days later, I ordered the kit and more than impatiently awaited its arrival like that Kermit the Frog meme "I wonder if my rifles ever miss me like I miss them" as he stares through the rainy window. A week or so later, it arrives, and I giddily install it, taking pictures of the installation and sending them to my dad and other friends to show off.
A few days later, I'm doing the worst part of the job, administrative work. As I'm going through paperwork, logging transactions, filing receipts, etc, I notice that despite me taking the time out of my day to ask which kit I needed, I ORDERED THE WRONG KIT! I didn't notice while I was putting it together because rifle-length buffer tubes are the same dimensions across the board. Even though Paul had taken the time to "arm me with the knowledge", I bought the .308 kit instead of the 5.56. The good news is though, that because the buffer tubes are identical, the error only cost me about $25 instead of a couple hundred dollars, as I just have to replace the buffer/spring.
So, folks, it's important to pay attention. Not just with ammo and making sure firearms you're working on are unloaded, but with the hair-pulling administrative stuff too.
PS: I am almost done with the build. I'm expecting a larger check from some work that I did and will be purchasing the last three things: magazines, flash hider, and bipod, but other than that, the build is complete. I will post the build in the appropriate section once completed.
