This information suggests that I not go less than a commander length and I would probably be most satisfied staying with the standard 5" government length. If you have or want something smaller, it's certainly up to you. We all have our preferences.

The 5" 1911 Government is the champion of the platform. I've had numerous 3" and 4.0"/4.25" Commander 1911 style pistols and have not noticed really significant differences in accuracy. But then I typically shoot at "combat" distance of no more than 15 yards these days.
In my experience, the absolute sweet spot, as far as concealability and reliability in a carry 1911 is the “CCO” configuration-that is, a 4.25” Commander slide & barrel on a compact Officer frame.
