Yeah, same thing as .38 caliber. They were named back when cartridges were measured different, often on the outside of the case.

Which is why the .357 magnum is not .38 magnum because the bullet diameter is the measurement.

And it gets even more confusing. A percussion revolver in .44 caliber uses .451, .454, and .457 round balls. A .36 percussion revolver in .36 caliber shoot .375 round balls
