Thoughts, reviews...The Sig Romeo 5 red dot

I would put something magnified on it, if you are going to hunt with it a non magnified dot is not it, especially if you have any long shots. especially if you have old eyes like mine. also some states have restrictions on deer antlers and you need to see if it's legal.
I appreciate your comment. My eyes, like yours are no longer young. Hunting has been a passion for many years but it's getting more difficult to spot the prey from a distance. My shots are kept within 100 yards, with glasses and scope. I have a Tasco 3-9x50 but didn't know how well it would work with my Victor .308.

Within 100 yards?

It’ll do you just fine.

Really, an unmagnified red dot is easily capable of staying on a 6” plate out to 200.
I can hit one every time with a 5.56 at 200 with a dot.

And I have nothing but good things to say about the Romeo 5 as well. I have tortured them and they keep on going. That said, I prefer a different reticle so most of my Romeo 5s have been replaced by 510s and 512s, but I still have a Romeo on my KSG25. Couple, few thousand rounds through that brute and the Romeo is still solid.

That said, for hunting with a .308 I would also suggest a decent scope. Vortex maybe. Something in the $200-$250 range will do fine if you're on a budget.

For putting accurate enough shots on target an RDS is fine for most ranges 200yds and under depending on your ability but for very accurate shots that matter I'd recommend a dedicated scope especially for hunting.

The Romeo 5 is a 2 MOA red dot meaning that it appears as a two inch dot at 100yds so your shot with good accuracy should hit within two inches of where the dot is on target. Like a couple of other posters have mentioned, I shoot out to 200yds with an unmagnified RDS often at steel plates and I get consistent hits. I also shoot out to 300yds with Iron sites on a couple rifles and get consistent hits too. Practice makes everything easier.
