I read these things and I’m left with this. I don’t talk to anyone now, who am I concerned with communicating with if things get sideways?

I already have trust issues. Can I trust the short wave any more than regular broadcast news?

I was raised and I raised my kids to be pretty self reliant, I don’t need to communicate to trust they are doing the right things.

I do keep the rudimentary whistle and mirror in my hunting gear. My phone is in my pocket (no service) presumably the satellite thing would work.

Ive always been both interested and confused by HAM gear. There are so many things that I dont know and even more that I dont know enough to even know I should ask. I had zero problems with military comms because I didnt have to worry about repeaters etc. I wish I could find a Ham club or somebody to say "do this"

I have played with FRS/GMRS but the range was limited nothing beyond the neighborhood.

I have a Garmin Sat texting device which is cool assuming you have someone to talk with and they have cell service. I used it a couple times in Afrika to talk to the kids. It has an emergency button that you can program to send an alert to a couple friends. My message was "Send lawyers, guns, and money. The shite has hit the fan" (Thank you Warren Zevon)

A compass is great assuming you have a MAP (and know how to read it. GPS made so many kids "map stupid"
