Under-Fire Reload Tactics

When I was working I would walk the fence line and practice my four point draw by the numbers all night long.

That's the fence. That smoke is The Waldo Canon Fire

I brought empty magazines from home and in the middle of the night I'd put a towel on my desk and practice reloads for a half hour or so every night.

When I was on the church security team and still now I never top off my range magazines.

I do whatever drill I'm practicing and I reload as the gun comes empty.

California gun owners who have CA "edition" guns have a disconnect safety which when the Magazine is dropped the gun will not fire. Scary thought if your doing a tactical reload and are suddenly attacked and need to return fire. Obvious the CA legislators could care less. Thankfully does not apply to most CA peace officers

You’ve got 1 round even if you don’t have a mag disconnect.

Show me one example where a CCW’r failed in a gunfight because of it.

Don’t get me wrong, none of my defensive handguns have one, but if I decided to carry my S&W 5906, I wouldn’t worry about it.

That 1 round could potentially safe your life

If you were carrying your 5906 and doing a tactical reload and had the mag dropped and were suddenly surprised by an attacker you should worry about it because your 5906 will not fire with the a detached or ill seated magazine.

What is CCW'r ? If your expecting me to give you an example I would refer you to Massad Ayoob who could provide you with numerous examples.

Just a thought or two as an everyday ccw guy with no law enforcement or military service.
I am 59 years old this year with marginal vision and fairly vicious arthritis in both hands from years of hard work.
I shoot both my EDC and my 2011 go fast guns 3 to 5 days a week at an In door range.
I can put 20 rounds into a
3.5" target at 10 yards in around 7 seconds with 1 or 2 misses.
the thought of ever having to reload in a self defense scenario(short of clearing a malfunction) seem pretty rare.
I say that because my assailant will likely have reached me by then and done his work.

Thoughts? Peace

You shoot the assailant 2-3 times and the guns jams. Lets say ammo related or such minor jam like a stove pipe that a rack and clear may solve quick. Perp is not down but still enough fight to be a threat.
Better be able to clear the gun and reload.

As you note .. clearing a malfunction. It happens. More than you think.
Practice. Practice practice

When we switched from the S&W M65 to the S&W 4006, one of the advantages proclaimed was that in the event of a struggle for the firearm is that you could "pop" the mag and it wouldn't shoot. As a prison guard transporting I/Ms, you start out in physical contact.
