The Osprey was historic and served our nation well. Meet the new tilt rotor. The range is impressive.

The US Army doesn't use the V-22 so the V-280 won't replace it.

The UH-60's will still be used in various roles.

Only the USMC, USN & USAF (spec ops only), and neither have indicated it would adopt the new V-280, although it would fit in with the USAF Spec Ops role that the V-22 is used in.

The V-280 won't fill the USN COD role but may be used to replace the SH-60.

The USMC may see that the V-280 would be better to move troopers & then use the V-22 to move supplies/equipment.

h 60 and its variants within the services is not going anywhere soon
army might trim the fleet, but its not going away
the navy uses 3 h60 models and has a desert full of brand NEW 60s waiting on manpower to fly and maintain them

osprey has always had issues since day one
its a complicated puppy and when the forces added things not intended into the flight envelope its short comings became very pronounced..
now days its a darn good bird. but BIG for what you get
h53 and c h 47 better fill the role unless you want a bit more range and speed

The V22 is in no way shape or form a Gold Standard.

Tilt rotor technology is overly complicated, and beyond maintenance intensive.

It, like the F35 program, are so deeply invested in, that even with proof of a lack of capability, and safety issues, they'll keep throwing money at them, to save face, and to keep from admitting the programs shouldn't have gotten so deep to begin with. The loss of aircraft, and crews be damned.

The V22 especially.

The author (some so-called Phd) makes some pretty stupid statements in the (her) article. Fox News needs to stop taking "low bid" articles.

------- "Then came the Army shake-up. On May 1, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth directed the Army to focus more on the Indo-Pacific. In that region, sheer distance and Chinese missile threat rings are locking out current helicopters. For the mission of air assault – when troops move into hostile and contested areas by rotary-wing aircraft – the hard truth is that the Army has a looming capability gap."

#1 - "Chinese missile threat rings are locking out current helicopters"

The V-280 is a rotary-wing aircraft and not invisible. It is just as vulnerable to CCP SAMs as a conventional helicopter due to the huge radar-signature generated by the prop-rotors.

#2 - "For pilots, the extra range, speed and survivability of a tiltrotor is a huge improvement on a helicopter. With a tiltrotor, they can zoom all over the battlespace with impunity and land any time, any place, in any conditions."

The article's author really needs to stop playing video games and get some education.

BTW - The prior administration selected the V-280 over the Sikordky Defiant.

Bonus

My youngest son spent 6 years in the US Army working on Chinooks. Before he got out the talk about the transformation of Army Aviation was the Hot Topic. The Tilt rotor aircraft are for light and medium lifts. The Chinook will stay the heavy lift.
