Actually both as the author alludes to. Inadequate engines were the weaknesss of most jets during, and post WW2 until engines like the J79, J52 & J57's, as examples became available in the mid-50's that led to the famous, F-4, A4, F-8, etc. that we all now.

This gives some insight into early & later engine development.


Let's not forget there were a lot of weird prop-engine aircraft that were designed, flew & didn't cut the mustard.
