Which Glock would be best for me?

Okay guys, humor me please. I have a three hour wait for my windshield replacement and TV here is boring, so here I am on TAL reading all the Glock stuff. This got me thinking (I know, dangerous territory here 😂), which one would the guys recommend for me? I figured I would throw a thread up here and, if nothing else, become educated and entertained at the same time.
So if y’all don’t mind…which Glock do you think would suit me? Just remember that I have little hands and am a small person. Thanks in advance!

PS…this post is supposed to be a little light hearted, and funny. Like I said, I’m a little bored. Who knows, maybe I’ll end up buying a Glock 🙂

I hate my Glock. But it was my carry gun for a long time. My cop buddies convinced me to park the 1911 I had worn for decades because of red dot sights. Back then, I had a custom slide made, the first batch Gabe Suarez offered for the Glock 19. The Trijicon is a game changer. Takes my reading glasses out of the equation. Later I cut the butt down to Glock 26 dimensions because the butt is what is hard to hide. In the winter I carried the 19 frame, the 19/26 in the summer. If you don't go red dot, put Heinie Straight Eight sights on it. Enough space in the rear notch for me to see without glasses. It never fails to go bang. It does not need a lot of lube, which keeps your clothes clean. It is light. It is inexpensive. It holds a lot of rounds, and the ten shot Glock 26 can even be reloaded with the factory 33 round mags if you want to carry that for a spare. They are great guns. But I hate them because I can't shoot it as well as I can a 1911. Don't get me wrong, I shoot it well. But just not those little groups the 1911 offers. For real daily carry, a great choice. But I still hate it. :) I would go 19 over 17...the 17 is just enough bigger at 5' 5' I can't hide it.

Yes, I cut the butt with a band saw and cleaned it up with a file.

It's all about "fit".

Glocks are famous for their "blocky" and odd-angle frame, which impacts how it fit's an individuals' hand and how you have to adjust your aim based on the grip angle. The smaller the Glock frame usually fits better but the grip angle is always there.

I wouldn't just panic buy a Glock due to the current events when you already have a pistol that fits you, and/or there's many other Glock-type guns that fix the blocky & angle issues to consider.

The Glock 45 is the worst in my opinion. Model number 45, not caliber. Because it has the full size grip of the Model 17 and the slide of the 19. The butt is the hard part to hide. So to me a 19 butt with a 17 slide would make more sense. But like the Colt Commander, shorter slide and full size butt, some swear by them. Faster to clear the holster they say. I guess with 60 in the rear view mirror I am not that lightning fast I can tell the difference.

I will say when helping out as a range officer for the local PD qualifying, more people with zero gun experience performed well with the Glock 19 faster than anything else. And it is small enough to carry off duty, which means one gun to learn for all the cops that are not "gun guys". Which, surprisingly, is most of them.

Maybe the best/ most affordable Glock to buy now might not even be a Glock. Ruger RXM?
Magpul is offering different sized frames to fit the slide(26,19and 17) the slide comes MOS milled from factory, light rail, Gen 3 parts compatible.
I have one and like it.

The RXM slide is very nice but the Magpul frame is "mind-knumbly Meh...." 🥱

@belladonna

This is the near-perfect alternative to the G19 if you want something to use G19 and G17 mags.

It fixes the grip and and frame issues of the OEM G19.

Buy an RXM, take the FCU out & slide off and put those two on the Sharp Bros frame, and toss the Magpul OEM frame.

Thanks Talyn. I’m definitely not panicking on the Glock thing. I did have a guy behind the gun counter at Scheels near the twin cities, who was also retired LE, try really hard to sell me one. I handled one there - couldn’t even tell you now which one. Didn’t feel right. Handled a couple at a LGS in Fargo, neither felt right. All the Glock talk got me wondering if there was one that might. I’m not in the market right now, but one never knows.

I can suggest on my part, I like and have both Gen5 G19 and G17, the Gen5’s have somewhat smoother trigger, it just depends on if you want a full size like the G17, or the somewhat smaller G19, the Gen5’s don’t have the finger grooves which I honestly didn’t care for. Best to go look at them and see which one feels better to you, as for any of the Glock clones, I passed, if you want a Glock style pistol, get the Glock, just me on clones…..

I swapped out my Gen 2 G19 frame for a PSA Dagger frame and it fixed all the grip angle/blocky feel issues, albeit they're not as great as the larger-framed Glocks.

I liked it so much I got a complete Dagger "extended barrel" upper to put on Dagger frame #1, then got a killed deal on another Dagger frame for the G19 Gen2 since I liked the fixes much better.

So my Gen 2 G19 is a G19/Dagger hybrid, and the OEM frame is in the safe.

I got the G19 Gen 5 MOS because if I don't keep the gun it will be easier to sell with the milled slide. Most Glocks do not have a milled slide so optics cannot be installed unless you spend money to get it milled. As time goes on the MOS guns will be harder to find as Glock was only doing MOS for military or Blue Label guns. There is a device that can be installed on grip to change the angle that makes it a lot easier to shoot. It's less than $40 and it does make a difference. I hated the finger grips on the other generations and that's why I like the Gen 5's. I would try to hold a few in hand before you purchase one. If you don't like the way it feels you can just walk away. Good luck in your search. Sometimes "Perfection" is not perfect.

I have a lot of Glocks. Love'em. I have a lot of experience with them. Not as much as some, more than others. The first Glock I shot was a 26. I had been shooting a Smith 5906 (a lot) and the differences in the pistol were great so I didn't pay it any mind. I had small children at the time and liked the external safety and DA/SA of the Smith even more just for this reason. I wouldn't shoot a Glock for another 11 or so years, after I retired from my first agency.

When I became a State Criminal Investigator I was issued a Glock, a 23 in .40 S&W. I was immediately informed that I was not allowed to carry it off duty let alone shoot it away from a State sanctioned range without a State rangemaster watching everything I did, thought, spoke or breathed. So I bought my first Glock, a 23 in .40 S&W (screw you Colorado 😬). I could carry this off duty. Doing so meant it was time to practice Glocking around. This led me to picking up my 27, the sub-compact little brother to the 23 and allowed to be carried as a BUG on duty. I think I shoot the 27 better than I shoot the 23. The 23/27 combo, backed up with either an AR-40 or AR-15, was my carry for the next 11-12 years(?).

So. Here is my .02¢ on buying a Glock if you are so inclined. If you have small hands you may want to start out by trying the Glock 42, their .380 model. I have not owned or shot a 42. A friend had one and it is smaller. Definitely smaller. Like, if I feed it and nurture it, it might grow up into a real gun one day small.

I have owned and shot a 43. I did not own it long. I sold it when I picked up an MOS model of the 43x. The grip is slimmer. Slimmer still with the 43, 43x and 48 have the same frame. It wasn't that I didn't like the 43 but it was that it irked me that they wouldn't share mags. WTF? Really? One of the great things about buying Glocks was that you could basically plug a larger mag (of the same caliber) into your smaller one and keep on Glocking. I did end up with a non-MOS 43x later but that was only because I was at a craft fair.

Moving up is the sub-compacts. I own a 26 and a 27. The 26 was basically a steal. The officer selling it just wanted to get rid of it and I will buy a gun if the price is right, even if normally I wouldn't go near it. This actually explains why I have a robins egg blue (teal?) Ruger Security 9 Compact.

These are great. They conceal well. There is a ton of aftermarket support for them. They take the mags of the two bigger sizes in their separate calibers (and more). Before I got my 26 I actually picked up a 9mm conversion barrel for both my 23 and 27 so there is that as well. But these are a little chunky. Medium sized hands or larger is what you need. This is true when moving up in all of the Glock sizes actually.

There are large frame Glocks as well. Their .45 ACP and 10mm models. I am not Glocky enough to tell you all of the models and versions but can say that I own a LE trade-in Glock 21 (.45 ACP). I also have a 10mm conversion barrel, RSA and mags to shoot 10mm out of my Glock 21. I feel like I have large medium hands or small large hands. I can't palm a basketball by any stretch. I would not recommend either of these as a first purchase unless you had big hands or had to have either a .45 or a 10mm.

I'm pretty sure that this does not answer your question...

Thank you for sharing your Glock stories. Made me giggle a few times. You did, by the way, answer a few questions. ☺️

The last Sig P365 I owned I kept it for less than a month. Why, you ask, I hated the recoil in that little gun. The very first P365 I owned is when they first came out. First problem was a broken firing pin. Second problem was a dead trigger at 400 rounds. Got the gun repaired and traded it off. Wasn't to happy with the Sig customer service arrogance either. I think they have fixed the quality concerns but like I said the recoil just turned me off.
