Why no .22LR handguns?

With the popularity and cost of .22LR ammo, why does SA not have any .22LR handguns in production? Not even any .22LR versions of a 1911, XD series, Echelon series (this would be amazing), etc.

Seems like there's a missing market here.

Importation issues, for one, as SA outsources most of its less expensive lines to Croatia. See GCA68.

There are aftermarket .22 conversions available for all but the Echelon…

I dunno. I had a Umarex version of an Sig that was a POS. Same experience with one of their 1911’s. Neither would feed/run reliably. I’d rather have a quality .22
