You're right, was an interesting article.
Besides the higher mfg. costs and heavier weight, likely were some other considered factors. Sometimes familiarity with previous firearms helps or hinders and newer updated training may be some of them? Essentially what's the best bang for the buck is usual outcome?

Considering that it operated the exact same way as the G3 it was replacing (at least for Germany)…that wasn’t an issue.

Never made a semi-auto only version, unlike the HK33/HK93.
