Snub revolvers are still relevant

I guess I'll remain the dinosaur and continue carrying my model 36 until I find a micro 9 that will conceal in my pocket.
I am 72 and getting too old to start a new caliber like a .380.
My MOD-2 works well with a cover garment, but the 36 is best for summer carry at least for me.

I save the plus P or faster loads for my all steel 4” guns.

For snubs both 38 and 32 H&R you can’t beat plain Jane 148 grain (or 85-100 in 32) wadcutter as they don’t need the speed to cut full holes and get to the goods without the blast.
 
I pretty much use two loads

I have some of the no longer available 130 gr Federal +P HST Micro short barrel JHP Wadcutters in it at Home and some 135 Gr +P Speer Gold Dot short barrel loads in the speed loaders. Both are fine loads but the HST Micro's have less penetration so outside and heavier clothing weather the Gold Dot'd go in.

I also carry the HST in my J frames with Federal punch in the speed loaders.

Used to reload 38spl 148gr Hollow based full wadcutters with the hollow base up front. They were not very accurate but thought they would make some ugly holes.

I know of folks that did but I wouldn’t run those as defensive studs simply as I don’t want them to expand too much with that soft lead and not penetrate.

With the flat part up front it doesn’t need the speed to cut full diameter holes through a sternum and the juice to get 14-16 inches to what it needs. I worked outside Memphis and had conversations with more than a couple fellow LEOs that dumped bad guys with them out of a snub.

I also know the 135 Gold Dot will work out of a snub but a little more recoil. A training acquaintance of mine used 145 Gold Dot out of his 642 backup gun last year. After action link below!

 
My duty revolver in OSI in 1974 was a S&W Model 36 with 3" heavy barrel. It was a surprisingly accurate revolver and very concealable. Working protection I shot a lot. They had a fairly short service life as shooting full service loads wore them out. Shaving lead was a common issue. They were replaced with chopped 1911's

Wasn't thinking about penetration. One or two of these in the gut would cause some serious pain and probably a fair amount of blood loss.

I’ve seen enough extreme blunt force trama where the real thug keeps going for a while that I wouldn’t count on that to stop them.

I have also been kn scen where a shooting victim was sprinting a block with 3 feet of intestines out his back from an SKS round before we caught up to him to treat him.

On my buddies video 2 lethal hits and look how far that dude made it before Police outside knocked him down. (He bled out enroute to hospital)

And like the suggestion of only shooting someone in the leg if you purposely shot them in a non vital area you stand a risk of the case being mentioned how fouled you really be concerned of serious bodily injury or death if you were good purposely aiming for a leg etc.

But if that’s your plan you’ll figure it out!

My example was just the point that outside of thoracic aortic area or CNS hits people are still hard sometimes to immediately stop. So when someone counts on a gut shot to disable them they are setting the self’s up.

The snubby has the issue that the short barrel doesn’t have the length for hollow points to get to speed for expansion like a 4” while the LSWCHP plus o or smaller 125’s is probably good enough that whole blast your not gaining anything that a full wadcutter can’t do with no blast!

But you want Jen to pay a lung for it you do you! LOL

It's been over forty years since I came up with that load. Never carried it as an LEO or civilian. Was just experimenting with different bullets. My testing showed major expansion shooting into water jugs and soaked newspaper and magazines. Was not scientific but still was an indicator.

They might not stop & drop, per se…but high-velocity body piercings tend to make people stop what they were doing that made them candidates for aforementioned piercings…

In the video above, the receiver sure as heck stopped fighting, and started running…and that’s a win in a use of force scenario, particularly for a concealed carrier.

So, yeah, I’m pretty sure even the old 158gr LRN would be plenty effective in getting a “stop” that way.
