Operation Ivory Coast, also referred to as Operation Kingpin, conducted on November 21, 1970, stands as one of the most daring and meticulously planned rescue missions in U.S. military history. The mission aimed to rescue American prisoners of war (POWs) from the Son Tay prison camp, located approximately 23 miles west of Hanoi, North Vietnam.

I had two Green Berets as instructors eons ago. Both were in the movie the Green Berets. One had three tours in VN and maintained the absence of POWs was due to a reporter who managed to view the detailed mock camp and published a picture of it in a Florida newspaper thereby alerting NVA commanders that something was up.

No mention was made of a supporting raid on the guards barracks a few miles away which turned out to house Russian advisors. Supposedly - I stress supposedly - the raiders killed about a hundred of them. The last time I read anything about this was in the late 70s.

Never heard about the intel leak by the reporter but I seem to remember something about the Russians getting lit up. During the Operation Urgent Fury Cuban and Russian Civil Engineers (aka: Military Advisors) got lit up by US troops 🪖🇺🇸
