AR-15 question about the safety detent

last2brake

Master Class
I bought new safety detents and springs to replace the ones that 'vanished' in my Saint AR.

I'm hoping the new detent pin might be too long (I won't admit I'm probably doing something wrong, but I never had this problem with the original detent).

Has this been an issue for anybody else (The length of the pin, not the screwing up part) ? Can the actual pin end orientation really matter ?

Are you talking about the Takedown pins?
I’m not familiar with the Saint AR.

A lot of factors can make a switch seem different. the detent has indentations on it that the detent has to line up with. which if you have the switch pushed in it should line up. i always move the switch around a bit til i see the detent fall in place. also different spring rates can make it harder or easier to manipulate. also even detents have sharper points than others and that can make a difference.

It sure is a tiny little piece to force into place if I'm not sure I should.

Do I need a metric hammer ?
no force needed to install, only to switch from safe to fire. iirc the safety spring is also the same spring as the ejector spring or the extractor spring (don't remember which)? if the spring seems excessively long then the safety detent is still in there. what is the total issue at this time with the safety?

BTW, the OP (me) was given the wrong detents. That's why the safety didn't work.

And since SA's illustrations in its "manuals" are such poor quality there wasn't enough resolution to see that the parts I got sent were wrong. I'd bitched about the poor quality of the illustrations here before, but got flamed for expecting too much from Springfield.

They saved a few cents on the support of their product. And made some money selling extra unneeded parts. Good for them. It's all my fault for expecting too much. Lesson learned. But the gun works now.

so, the detent you had was for the pivot/takedown pins..............if so, they're longer than the safety detent

Yeah, I got that. It was my suspicion from the beginning.

It sure would have been nice if SA's high-quality (sarcasm alert) manuals didn't make the two different pins look identical.

I just need to be more selective next time (when I remember Springfield overall package) before buying another gun.

Sorry. What earlier turned out to be a minor bitch turned out to be a big hassle after all. It sucks that Glock does such a better job at just the little things, but Springfield can't even get the little things right. Especially when the competition does.

It's my fault for not stopping the range master from moving my rifle with the grip removed. I get that. I couldn't compare the new replacement parts with the lost one. Duh.

the takedown/pivot detents can go in either way, but the safety detent's pointy end goes toward the selector as the flat end towards the spring. posting pics of the issue/problem at hand helps a lot.
