Survival traing and the knife which is no more

Oldmountaiman

Master Class
Long time ago I went to a place in Florida for survival training which I did not know till I got there. The place was in Florida and it was hot and miserable. One day as we were dreaming of being anyplace but where we were. We were called to muster and told we would be put in the jungle like area around the base. We were given a poncho and a Marbles Arms short blade knife along with a canteen. In the middle of the night we were taken out and dropped off in different areas and told we need to go in a certain direction. The only thing I liked was that short fixed blade knife, canteen and a small section of a map. We all made it to a extraction point and given a atta boy and nothing more. The interesting point was the knife we got to keep and went to the high country with me but the sad point was when returned to the city my best knife disappeared while I was in the hospital. So much for civilization. I could never find another one like it so I bought 2 Randall knives,a model 5 and a model 7..

Hmmm maybe an expert or Woodsman. If not these two give a decent description maybe I can find for you in The History of marbles

The one we received had a blade just under 5in and a leather sheath with a stone as did many survival
knives of the time. We all had our initials and service number on the backside of the sheath and yes I still remember my service number.

Hmmm I was thinking perhaps the Jet Pilots knife but that just over 5 in. It is the only Marbles I have cone across with a stone on the sheath. This is the knife design by Marbke that was used as the basis for all subsequent pilot survival knives by several makers over the years for issue. It is, to my memory, the only Marbles tied directly to the military.

If it is, you can find good examples for around $1500

Our helo pilots had them also, and if we worked a deal, ground guys would have them. I inherited my FIL and it was almost in brand new condition.

The pilots at the place I was at were flying Hellcats, there were a couple of Corsairs.

Here is a brief history of the Military issue jets pilot knife. I have heard tales of a few special runs from Marbles for special military uses, testing perhaps yours was one of the units testing the design, or specisal training purchases

I remember some of those Pilot knives.. Camillus and KaBar IIRC. I was hot to have one back in the day- '71-'72- but went with a KaBar USMC I found in a shop, with a chromed blade of all things. Wish I'da kept it but had to get the Buck 120 General dontcha know... I've never seen another chromed KaBar in the 55 (I was 19-20 at the time) years since then, nor even heard of one. It was a genuine KaBar but... ????
The pilot knife with the sharpening stone was a good knife, the stone not so much IME... much prefer a hard Arkie stone about the same size to carry on a sheath...

This is my up close and personal wet work made by Forseti. It has a 3in Demascas blade called the Shakelton, named for a explorer who saved all his men after there tall ship was frozen in the ice at the South Pole. It has a leather sheath and it's easy to conceal.

If you like to read the Book is Endurance about the Shakelton expedition, fittingly named after the ship and the fact it was rhe greatest feat of human endurance perhaps ever.

This is CRK&T called the Ritual and it's to send the little boys with drupy pants that think they want to play. My daughter bought this for me last Christmas 😁
