Hi guys,
I hope I'm not wearing out my welcome. I realize I'm sucking up a lot of bandwidth around here but I think I'm about to turn a corner with my new Echelon. I brought along my new TX22 also, just because they are both filthy pigs and I'm wondering when I'll get around to cleaning them. Maybe tomorrow night after all my chores are done.
It was a gorgeous day after church, a lovely 66°. I went to the range in town because the other one is closed on Sunday.
All of my favorite lanes were open!
So I set up my kit on my most favorite, #10.
Again, I'm working with my newest pistols, the SA Echelon 4.5F Comp and TX22 TORO. I brought S&B 124 grain for the Echelon and Aguila Super Extra along with some Winchester Wildcat for the TX22.
Yes, I shot all 200 rounds of that S&B. It's a good thing I didn't shoot 10-shot strings the whole session. That would've taken forever. Say, did you notice the timer?
Since I had the range all to myself I decided to shoot a total of five 10-10-10 drills. I won't bore you with all of them because they were pretty lousy, none of them were shot clean. I'll need to practice this drill more with this pistol to get better. There was improvement in the five I shot today. Here are my numbers, 1st shot/10th shot/total score.
#1: 1.62 sec/7.14 sec/76 points
#2 1.64 sec/8.71 sec/85 points
#3 1.83 sec/9.36 sec/86 points
#4 2.05 sec/8.91 sec/92 points
#5 1.90 sec/9.36 sec/85 points
I shot the first one too fast, especially since I was out of practice. I slowed down a little for the other drills. Drill #4 turned out to be the best, but I still didn't shoot it clean. Here's that #4 target.
I even kept the video, if you'd like to see it.
I tried using fewer targets today. For example, the next 50 rounds all went on the same B-8 center, at 10 yards. This was not exactly slow fire but a second or two between shots, plus mag changes.
At least they're all on the paper, about 10 hits out of the black. I started a little ragged hole in the 10-ring.
I changed it up for the next 50 rounds and stuck on some different stuff around the new B-8 center. The post cards are 3.75"x5.75" and the reactive circles are 4" in diameter.
I thought I did pretty well with most of those targets. The lower right circle has some low-left. For some reason that area of a target usually gives me trouble. On the B-8 center, see that hit right there on the 8-ring? I'm not sure if it belongs to the string on the post card or the B-8 center. But I think it belongs with the post card, i.e. my low-left showing again. What do you think?
OK, I've got one more box of 9mm and I'm going to put them all on my favorite target, the 12"x18" reactive silhouette. I'm really hoping for a big ragged hole at 10 yards.
OK, once I tighten up that group just a little and hold a little less six o'clock, I might be good enough to carry @SimonRL's range bag.
Is that good enough for a glam shot? Oh, why not?
Now that all the 9mm is gone, let's start having some fun with my only OD Green pistol, the TX22 TORO. I used a small black silhouette at 10 yards, plus the yellow sticker to give me some contrast to aim at. I shot the first magazine at it, and then brought it back to check my hold.
It seems I can hold a little more toward six o'clock. After putting another magazine on it, the group seems a little more centered.
I stuck on a 4" reactive circle and patched it up. I also stuck on a larger red dot so that I could see the bullseye better. It still looks pretty dang small at 10 yards.
I put two magazines on it and it came back like this.
Well, drat. After hitting the bullseye a few times the big red dot came off. I also missed the target five times. Still, I guess that's not too bad out of 32 shots, only one hit out of the 9-ring on that silhouette. This TX22 is great to shoot.
For now, that's enough of the Aguila Super Extra ammo. Out of the five magazines (4@16 and 1@22) there were 3 malfunctions with bent cases. Now I'll move on to the Winchester Wildcat for the next series.
I put all of those magazines on the next target. The Winchester Wildcat had 6 malfunctions out of this batch, failure to feed w/bent cases.
Yeah, I started shooting too fast and let some get wide. One of these days I'm really going to concentrate. The range closes at 4pm but I've got time for one more batch of magazines from the TX22. I'm going to finish up this box of Aguila Super Extra. I thought about shooting at 15 yards but decided to go for it all. I patched up the 12x18 reactive silhouette and sent it out to 25 yards. I could hardly see it! It's kinda dark way back there, I couldn't see any of my hits. My last target came back like this, after about 50 rounds.
Hmm. If I'm going to shoot that far with this pistol, maybe I should get an optic for it. I should probably slow down too. But this TX22 is so fun to shoot!
OK, it's time to crack open a dark, high gravity brew, fix myself some brats and a salad, then binge more of my sci-fi list while Mrs. BassCliff is not around. When she gets back it'll be all cooking and home improvement shows.
But I actually like watching that stuff too. I'm hoping to get in one or two more range days before she returns. I'll let you know. Thanks for putting up with me. Be blessed.
Thank you for your indulgence,
BassCliff
