The .38 Super

The .38 Super, also known as .38 Superauto, .38 Super Auto, or 9×23mmSR, is a pistol cartridge that fires a 0.356-inch-diameter bullet. It was introduced in the late 1920s as a higher pressure loading of the .38 ACP, also known as .38 Auto. The older .38 ACP cartridge propels a 130-grain bullet at 1,050 ft/s, whereas the .38 Super pushes the same bullet at 1,280 ft/s.

The .38 Super retains the original dimensions of the .38 ACP case. The cartridge was originally designed to headspace on the semi-rimmed case, which worked in the Colt M1900 due to the design of...

I'm a long time fan of the 38 Super. I currently own six of them and wouldn't hesitate to buy another.
Think of it as a 9mm on steroids. Although most current offering from major ammo companies aren't a whole lot more powerful. Lawyers, what can I say? To get the true level of the .38 Supers capability, you gotta hand load.
A few years ago, I decided to see what all the fuss over 9mm 1911s was all about and bought one. I was completely underwhelmed. So I swapped the barrel for a 38 Super and never looked back.

I've always wanted a 38 Super (and still do) but just have never taken the plunge. Both it and the 9x23mm Winchester have always interested me.

The .357 Mag/125 JHP is supposed to be a fantastic stopper. A .36” 125 at 1425 fps.

I’ve chronographed the Federal and from a real 4” gun, it runs from 1360 to close to 1425.

The Cor-Bon .38 Super 125 JHP runs 1360-1395 from my 5” 1911s.

Not exact, but very close.

38 Super(b) is my favorite round for the 1911. Handloading brings out its best. Sweet shooters for sure.

I keep thinking about buying a 9mm barrel, spring, and a couple mags to get dual use out of my 38 Supers.

Then I remember my dislike for 9mm 1911s. Not much point in them when there is the glorious HiPower.

I picked up a TISAS 1911 in .38 Super and it shoots as good as it looks. .38 Super is a fantastic round.
