New owner of a 1911 and have a question

I just recently purchased the 5 inch Prodigy Comp as my first 1911 and noticed when i rack the slide back it automatically locks the slide ? Is that normal for a Prodigy or all 1911’s ? I have to hit the slide release for it to go back . I also own the Hellcat Pro and 4.5F Echelon Comp and with those two ( different platform i know striker fired ) i have to hold the slide lock when i rack it for it to lock . If somebody can please educate me if thats a normal thing for Prodigy or 1911’s in general or if i have a problem on my hands where i need to return it to Springfield . Thanks for any feedback and help in advance

If it has an empty magazine in it, the slide should lock back. If there is NO mag inserted, the slide should not lock.
By the way, it’s generally a good idea to clean a brand-new 1911 (and ‘derivatives’) before shooting or fooling with it too much. It’ll eliminate a lot of potential break-in problems…

Congrats on the new buy :)

Great to know ! Yes it had an empty mag inserted . I’ve been reading a few horror stories about this Prodigy and you confirmed what i was reading about it needs to be broken in to perform well so I’ll be racking the slide like crazy the next few days while cleaning / lubing in between before i take it to the range for the first time . Thank you for you knowledge ..

Thank you . I’m super excited to shoot this thing 🤣 feel like a kid at Christmas and got the new bike i wanted

Hi @DatBoyChamp,

Indeed, most, if not all, handguns will lock back on an empty magazine. Just leave out the mag if you want to have a racking party. ;)

I would not recommend much dry fire unless you use snap caps to save excess wear or damage to the firing pin.

Forgive me if I state the obvious. :p

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff
That is good to know ! Thank you .. just started shooting as of February of this year so getting my feet wet on a couple different platforms so any knowledge i can get i soak it all in and continue learning at this time in my journey nothing is “ obvious “ yet lol . So i appreciate your input

I got into shooting seriously only 5 years ago. What helped my fundamentals early on was dry fire practice with a laser cartridge. I have both G-Sight and MantisX systems. The G-Sight is cheaper and, I think, more fun. MantisX gives you a lot more informational feedback.

Thank you for your indulgence,

The other thing you should avoid is dropping the slide with the slide release on an empty chamber, you can damage the gun. Only do it with snap caps or live rounds, otherwise ease the slide down.

Respectfully if you have not I would recommend taking a basic class to learn the basic operating of a semi automatic handgun.

And while you didn’t mention why hih have started out on if you have been shooting since February I am sort of puzzled uiu didn’t learn about the Empty mag keeping a slide locked back.

While we were all there once no biggie but I’d again recommend taking some classes and lean operation, then maybe after uiu get that down some defensive how to draw, carry etc and by classes I mean where uiu have a vetted knowledgeable teacher that can demo then watch and correct anythjng.

YouTube is not a teacher. Yes you can watch some interesting things and there are a few valid channels but most are junk as gas as firearms stuff and having someone watching and be able to correct anythjng faults in real time is just a better way to get profecient.

Good luck

I’ve taken a basic course of gun safety and it’s possible they did or did not go over that in class as that seems like a detail they could’ve left out or i didn’t retain as i never had that issue with my other two guns that i ever noticed or remember unless the mag was always out when i press checked and when i went to pick up the Prodigy the mag was already inserted empty and when i went to check if it was clear it locked back.. its all a learning process for me and I’ll get there someday finding out all the intricate details . Thank you

It’s not a good 1911 to start with ? What do you recommend ? Or maybe I’m to newbie to get the joke lol
A little ribbing is would say While Prodigy Staccato and other high cap are 1911 style most 1911 purists don’t consider them that as they are not single stack and they are not even 45 for some .

Like some call a mag a clip

You are gokd this is one of the better forums to ask and get respectfully feedback. (With a little humor) as I said earlier we were all new inece and most of us remember that.

Welcome aboard!

This. Lots of goofy “advice” on YouTube . There ARE some good ones but if something sounds a bit shaky stay away,

Rather than watching an online video, get some 1911 books from reputable writers and read up on every aspect of the platform. Most will have images to help you understand. Keep in mind that single stack is a bit different than double stack pistols.

After all that studying you'll be able to start your own online video channel...;)

I have one of the first ones, under 2k SN.
No problems with mine that weren't mag related. Mines still the way it came from the factory, haven't upgraded anything.

SA didn't clean up the mag feed lips properly, they were really kinda rough, cleaning them helped a bunch with feeding issues.

Semi auto 101
So if you look at the follower of your magazine there is a little indent on the side that when the magazine is empty it pushes up on the slide stop after the last round is fired and locks the slide to the rear so you know your empty. When the magazine is loaded the follower is below the lips of the magazine and it won’t trip the slide stop. Welcome to the forum no such thing as a stupid question cause the only way to learn is to ask.

I'm just messing with you. I am a purist. I think a 1911 is a single stack and either .45 ACP or .38 Super.

Honestly I was cool when they came out and everyone was calling them 2011s. I think that's a much better name for them.

I only have ya by a month having started shooting day after Christmas 2024 (so basically this year). I don’t know if they covered it in the course you took but a course that goes over part identification ie breech, muzzle, firing pin, mag follower, slide lock etc. is great! Many ranges offer classes/demo on cleaning which involves stripping down and in that helps you learn how the items inside interact to make the boom boom magic. YouTube is ok and i learned how to mortise a fire door and install spring hinge when i was selling my house and the garage door was all messed up. Also followed a video and successfully swapped trigger on my smith and Wesson. Like others said, it’s an ok learning tool but i think it was Regan that said “trust but verify”. I’m a bit younger than most here so someone can check that 😉😂

Welcome to the forum!
