Hey howdy hey folks!
It's a beautiful day to head down to the range!
It's too bad I have to go indoors to shoot. But at least is wasn't hot and sticky inside, like it can be sometimes. I was able to procure my favorite lane. The young fellow next to me didn't mind, even though we were the only two in there at the time.
Hey! I noticed that my bits of masking tape were still there from last week. I guess just a few had been used to patch up someone's target. I took off the rest and put up some fresh bits to patch my targets today.
Yes, I brought along a chamber flag, just in case.
I also brought the same pistols as last week because this lazy old country bass player had not cleaned them yet. This might be the 4th range trip for this trio. I will definitely clean them this weekend, maybe.
I brought 50 rounds of 9mm 124g and 50 rounds of .45ACP 230g along with this open box of Wildcat. The TX22 didn't like it all that much but the others ran flawlessly, G17L and XD45 Mod.2 Tac.
The plan today is work on single hand shooting. I used a little drill I learned a few years ago when training in SoCal. It's a simple drill, I'm sure you all have used it, 5 shots with both hands, put your weak hand behind your back, 5 shots with strong hand only, then transition for 5 shots of weak hand only with your strong hand behind your back. With the XD45 that also involved a mag change because I couldn't put 15 rounds in those mags. I started with the XD45 and the first, cold, target came back from 10 yards looking like this.
Yeah, kind of all over the place. But when I placed a new B-8 center on this target, only two hits were outside the 8x11 sheet. I guess I would've done some damage on center mass.
OK, the next B-8 center, target #2, came back like this. That's a little better.
This was a slow fire exercise but I tried not to dawdle, putting about 2 seconds between shots when single handed. I'll tape on another B-8 center and try again. Target #3 came back like this.
Not too terrible, but still let a couple get off the paper. I regret that I did not keep track of which hits belonged to which single hand. Maybe next time. (I'm assuming that my two-handed shots were mostly in the middle.)
For the 4th target, I had 5 cartridges left. I stuck on a 4-inch "aim small, miss small" reactive circle so I could try for some pure marksmanship.
I'm going to have to buy a new roll of masking tape soon.
The last five hits from the .45 came back like this.
OK, nothing to write home about. I'll bet this gun will shoot better after I clean it. Next I did the same procedure with the G17L. I was able to load 15 rounds in three magazines and keep the flow going better, 2-hands, SHO, WHO, five rounds each. The first target came back like this.
Whooo-eeey! I think I'll slow down a little for the next target. Target #2 came back like this.
That's pretty not too bad. I let one off the paper totally but only one other out of the black. But, again, I don't know which hand I was using for those flyers. Maybe next time I'll keep better track. Maybe. Target #3 came back like this.
Drat. I let a couple get barely off the paper. All but two of the remainder are in the black. If I practice this more, who knows? OK, we're down to the last five cartridges and I sent them at the "aim small, miss small" target. Here ya go.
Oh phooey. I was dangerously close to getting them all on the reactive circle. Next time. Maybe. Next up with the Taurus TX22 T.O.R.O. I just filled up all the magazines (one 22 round and four 16 round) and sent them downrange just about as quickly as I could. The target came back from 10 yards looking like this.
I'll bet if I slowed down a little I could tighten up that group. I had to slow down once in a while because the TX22 would hiccup with this ammo more often than it should've.
There were 8-10 jams that bent the case, bent or gouged the bullet, or just didn't feed properly.
I'm not crazy about this ammo. It doesn't work well in a couple other .22s I have. Of course, this pistol is a dirty little piggy that needs a good cleaning. Maybe that would help too. I tried another reactive target at 15 yards but all the malfunctions were a distraction. I'm embarrassed to show you this one.
I figured I've had enough. I raised up the chamber flag of surrender and packed my kit.
Monday evening I have an advanced defensive pistol class at the outdoor range again. It'll be fun to get outside and do some scootin' and shootin'. Thanks for hanging out with me today. Take care, shoot straight.
Thank you for your indulgence,
BassCliff
