10mm vs. .45 ACP with Paul Harrell

from buffalo bore - Many who use 10mm carry this type of loading and not the weaker stuff Paul was showing.

A .45 ACP with a still considerable 185g bullet can easily be loaded safely to 1,100 fps or ~200 fps of a comparable 10mm. I find 1,050 to be a little more reasonable but that's still 200 fps faster than hardball. With that kind of performance there is just not enough incentive to take on the 10 and I was around shooting when the Delta Elite was the thang. Nice but just not that special. I do recommend increasing the recoil spring rate a bit to avoid "battering".

If one loves the recoil and everything with the true 10mm loadings (like the original Norma loadings) fine however we have found quite a few things out.

You can get the penetration by several bullets WITHOUT needing all the blast. And penetration matters more than expansion and caliber.

While the 10mm light gets a bad wrap the FBI went to they went to it for several reasons (and it wasn’t because of agents not being able to handle it however I’d challenge anyone to run a 1,000 round 2 day course in a 1076 with full power 10mm and tell me you liked it….if your honest you’d say it sucked)

The 10mm light got the penetration they needed and aka the 40 was borne which now isn’t cool because the 9mm gets the penitrarion.

High Desert Cartridge has done the same thing with the 357 DB load (Darryl Bolke) a 357 XTP that is 1,000 FPS and gets that 16 inches of penitrarion and expansion. Not it’s not a flower like HST but it works and doesn’t beat up your old K frames

If you just like the big boomers thwre are offerings for hih and more power tonyiu but like OC spray the higher the numbers doesn’t always mean effectiveness but Tim the Toolman Taylor syndrome “more power errr” sometimes gets folks!

So if your into that good, you do you. For me and.my choice I am good with a 45 ACP doing what it always does!

That is a meow rounds for a 357 magnum.
Yes but it still gets 16” or more of penitrarion and expansion. It’s not a golf ball like HST but it does what is needed:

It is also great for snubs you don’t get beat up and it does around 920 fps

They also have a 149 XTP load that mirrors the old 145 Silvertip 357 mag the FBI and Marshal service use to issue that was always a great performer compared to theor 9mm offering

Ok I’ll chime in with my take. Yes the 10MM feels like the .40 from 2 different manufacturers depending on the load. I used to like .45 but the 1911 sits as I play with the .40 and 10MM. I usually end everything with a 9MM because the muscles are a little bit sore. The M&P 10MM used to make my hand tingle at first but now it’s just like “it’s going”. The .40 is a little cheaper and little harder to find than the 10. Yes I used to shoot .45 Colt till I couldn’t justify 50 bucks a box for a Taurus Judge that barely fit in my hand. I’d love to get the XDm elite in 10MM but SA doesn’t have the Illinois version for sale.

180 gr. JHP/Hard cast .357 mag BB or DT at 1400+ in a 6", or 1850 in a 16" carbine fits my needs in my area.
