Range Report: First S&W Day (NGD), 11/8/26

Hey!

Today I picked up my new-to-me 686 Plus. Instead of the nice FedEx box, I thought I'd pick up a cheap case in which to carry it home.

Then I realized I had time to take it for a test drive. It was actually cleaner than it looked in the pictures so I went for it. I bought a box of overpriced ammo at the range and secured my favorite lane.

Then I realized I had no eyes, no ears, and no target. Ack! Not to worry. I bought a target and my buddies behind the counter comp'd the rest. Matt was chiding me, "Dang, Cliff! Don't you carry that stuff in your truck?"

I sent the B-8 out to 10 yards, my usual M.O. The first cylinder, 7 shots, were sent double action.

The trigger is smooth but it is a very long pull, longer than any other in my little collection. For Mr. @Jsimon78, I still get a little low left with a new gun. Aww, who am I kidding? I do that more often than I like to admit. ;) Maybe the double action will get easier with time and a good cleaning. I shot the next two cylinders single action, very very very light trigger. Cylinder #2.

They all landed in the black with the majority in the 10-ring. Cool. Here's cylinder #3.

One of those just barely made it out of the black. This is a sweet, sweet wheelgun. It's got a big KABOOM but the recoil is very manageable. I'm sure .38 Special will be even softer. I'll need a little more practice using double action, but that's OK. You know how much I love to practice. :D

That's it, just 21 shots for today. I was on my way to play in church tonight. I've got more ammo on the way, 250 rounds of both kinds. Plus, my new Sig 1911-X Freedom should be here next week. Too much fun. My gig savings have really taken a hit the last couple of weeks. I'll have to chill for a while. Thanks for letting me share my fun. Blessings to all.

Hi,

Good post. I just can't bring myself into wheel guns. I have one, I hate shooting it, but it was the first gun I purchased as an adult many years ago....can't part with it.

I wanted this for my one-of-each collection. I like it a LOT. I doubt I'll ever carry it but it'll be fun on the range, especially after I get a holster for it. I won't want a .44 magnum, one big revolver is all I need. ;)

Thank you for your indulgence ,

About a 100 years ago in my LEO time practiced DA shooting quite a bit with S&W 19/66 revolvers. There were no trigger kits back then did my own that I learned while attending gunsmith school. Used Ark hard stones to polish all metal to metal moving parts being careful not change geometry. Cut 1-1/2 coils off trigger return spring and draw filed the mainspring checking frequently to ensure good primer strike.

Oh yeah! That's some hard core old school stuff right there. :)

Hi,

Fun times. Hope you do enjoy it. I wouldn’t mind a good wheel gun in .357 but my 10MM addiction is to strong.

I thought about 10mm but had to compromise, for now. I wanted a large revolver and now I'm saving my gig money for a .357 lever action rifle. I like using one caliber for two or more guns.

Although, I hear Hi-Point has a pretty good 10mm rifle. ;)

Hi,

Dang . I have the eternal search for a semi , that has a trigger as good as a Revolver .

Best find so far , the DA on my Sig P225 . ( Civillian , not surplus P6)

None of my striker guns have horrible triggers, well, except for the Kahr CW9. The XD-M Elite, XD9 Mod.3, and VP9 have great triggers but none of them compare to the single action trigger on the 686 Plus. The double action pull is very smooth but very long. It gives me too much time to upset the sight picture. I just need more practice with it. Maybe tomorrow. ;)

Well I do have a RIA 1911A1 FS MS, S&W M&P M2.0, and SA XDM ELITE match in 10MM. I’m also eyeing up getting another XDM elite in 10MM to shoot with if I can talk a LCS to keep the magazines (Illinois has a magazine limit of 15 and I have some of those now). I also like the RIA 1911 tactical I saw at the gun store I used to go too which is 10MM.
