The story can go one of two ways. First is that the homeowner is utterly unprepared for this and possibly panics, potentially getting injured or even killed. The second path is one where our homeowner has prepared for such an event and has an action plan in place. It goes without saying that you need to be homeowner number two, yet many people do not really understand what goes into home defense.

My opinion,
I "think " that different people react or prepare in different ways. There are those who do not leave the house without several weeks worth of MRE'S , 308 SBR truck gun, side arm, mossy shotgun and several cans full of ammo. And then there are those that take it to extremes LOL. That being said, I (like most) think I am adequately prepared for the bump in the night scenario. In the case of economic or societal breakdown I think that knowing like minded folks and establishing a "what if " plan is a good idea. Be prepared but do not live in paranoid fear.
 
I can't imagine someone driving all the way out to the Outer Rim Territories to commit a burglary.

Once they got out here why in the hell would they pick my house?

I mean, seriously, if people want to steal from you out here they back a stock truck up to your fence and they load up all your cattle and drive away. Much less risk much more
 
Long advocated for the average person to let trouble come to them. However, my beloved cats are out there. So I'm coming down the hall, as fast as my legs will carry me, (and I'm still pretty spry all thing considered) like the rath of God, swearing like a pirate and that ain't birdshot in the scatter gun. I know, I know, I know quiet, ambush, surprise, well after 60 years of smoking at o-dark-thirty I'm going to be hacking my lungs out, no Ninja b.s. for me. So Blitzkrieg here we come.
 
Well, to plan could mean lots of different things, but GET ONE, PRACTICE IT, and be prepared -- anything can & will happen. Variables will occur. I have MY plan and know where every firearm is around the house. If one isn't on me, it's within arm's reach. Another thing to consider is fire or inclement weather -- plan for that as well.
 
I live where everyone has a gun and hunts, and access to a backhoe. The last home invasion burglary I can remember the burglar ended up on a slab. Our sheriff recommends you shoot burglars. If a n'er do well shows up the dogs will make a ruckus. We have pretty good outdoor lighting around the perimeter of the house. I am pretty much always armed but if not my house guns are in quick access.lock boxes. If I need one, I prefer it be the 870, but the 1911 or an AR will do. All my house guns have mounted weapon lights and I have several tactical flashlights stashed around. Worse case scenario, we have a safe room that Mrs Greener knows to retreat to. Lastly, if someone breaks into my house, he is going to meet one seriously pissed off homeowner armed with firearms he is trained with Safety at our age is important.

Now, if I can just avoid tipping over while putting on my boxer shorts in the morning.....
 
How about this CA liberal Hilton family firing a shotgun in the air with 3 robbers in their house. Confronts them. Then fires into the air. 🤔🤷🏻‍♂️

If intruders enter my shack, they are in for a very unfortunate encounter.

As of late, however, perhaps because of my age, I started to worry about stuff that shouldn't even be on my mind. I think this is largely due to the current political environment and where I live.

If I had to defend my property against civil unrest, I have enough on hand at any given time to stave off a small army. Then the thought popped into my head that it would take just one molotov cocktail to absolutely ruin my day.

This exact concern has bedeviled me for several years now... Not of course that I have anything anyone would want to risk their lives for, but people being what they are... an Old Fart might seem like easy pickin's...

A barking dog...great first line of defense and alert, will also dissuade many a burglar. Wifey is a retired LEO, doesn't frighten, and handles her wheel gun quite well. I'll take the shotgun any day. Hope it never happens, but if I must shoot an intruder, he won't be going to jail. These types of crimes don't happen regularly where I live in Idaho. Most everyone is armed to the teeth, knows how to use them proficiently, and it's common knowledge.
 
First night time burglaries of an occupied house are rare, as in Hollywood fiction rare, the exception being those involved in corner pharmaceutical sales (or sadly the mistaken address). Burglars not want interference or witnesses or anyone shooting back. Burglaries are FAR more likely to take place during the day, when no one is home. This is not to say that there arent rapists, pedophiles, and stalkers. It doent mean that there wont be someone lurking around your property to steal your lawn mower and 4x4 in the shed.

Now as to dealing with a threat, well, that requires you be alerted in the first place. Can you be sure youll hear something downstairs or in the garage or outside before they even get to the door... Dogs and alarms will help. Theyre a start but what else will slow down attackers. For starters I like perimeter alarms that will alert you BEFORE they get to the door

Would be robbers were staking the place out with trail cams to get instant upload of coming/goings of homeowner. Be vigilant. Technology has changed to give them an instant “look out”
