Why I Don't Volunteer That I'm Armed To The Police

The Night Rider

Professional
First I want to say that Colorado (at present). does not require me to inform a police officer that I'm armed in an official contact

The second thing I want to say is that I have not been pulled over by the police since (I think) 2013.

So in 2008 I had a job working in a group home in Green Mountain Falls Colorado. It was about 30 miles west of Colorado Springs on Highway 24.

There was one ******* State Trooper who worked Highway 24 in Ute Pass.

He pulled me over once for failure to yield the Right lane while he had somebody pulled over on the right shoulder of the road. It wasn't a law at the time he just thought I should do it so he pulled me over ran my license registration proof of insurance and then told me why he thought I should do that then let me go.

The second time he pulled me over he pulled me over for "Going too fast for conditions."

He walked up to the car introduced himself and told me why he pulled me over. then asked for my License Registration and Proof of Insurance.

I handed them the documentation and he asked me if there were any weapons in the vehicle.

I already had my wallet in my hands. I didn't say anything I took the concealed handgun permit out of my wallet and handed it to him.

He went absolutely ballistic. He stepped away from the car and put his hand on the gun he started screaming at me. He told me that I was required to a notify him immediately upon contact if I had any weapons in the vehicle. No such law exists in Colorado. Then he told me he could take me to jail. I kind of wish you would have tried it because I would have been able to retire a lot sooner.

About six months later I read that his wife had asked for a divorce and he killed her then got in a standoff with the cops before killing himself.

Remember that's the guy with the gun and and all the power in the interaction standing outside your car window by the side of the dark, deserted road in the middle of the night.

I've never had the following happen to me and that's the only cop who asked me if there were guns in the car.

But I've read stories on the internet of cops disarming posters and returning their guns to them in pieces in a paper bag.

I live in TX and have had a LTC (License to Carry) for years. I'm not going to bore everyone on the different duty to inform laws in TX. If you have a TX LTC, you better know the laws. And if you Constitutionally carry in TX, you better know those rules. That being said, any time I have been pulled over (and I very seldom get pulled over---if so, it's something minor), I inform the officer immediately about my LTC, whether I'm carrying or not. I'll also let them know where on my body or vehicle a weapon might be. Doing this all while being friendly and helpful. I have not had a traffic violation in over 30 years. At the most, let go with a warning. Now if you want to be an A-hole about things, then I'm perfectly fine with you being cuffed and laid over the hood of your vehicle. And maybe a drug dog tearing up your "Corinthian Leather" on your land barge. Now you all do what you want on a traffic stop. I'll choose to follow the laws and be helpful and friendly. And be on my way in a matter of minutes. If you don't like the laws in your state, then do something to change them. Or maybe put the badge on yourself and show everyone how you want it done. Look at me go! Making more friends all the time! lol

You do you Boo.

BTW it's too cold the very first line in my post Colorado does not require me to inform a police officer that I am armed upon official contact.

By not informing any hypothetical officer who might pull me over although it hasn't happened in 12 years I am following Colorado law To. The Letter.

I am doing me Boo. And I'm talking about Texas law. I doubt I'll be traveling to Colorado anytime soon, but I'll follow whatever law is in place there at the time of any travel to your state.

While I’d never pretend to know the facts of interactions I wasn’t personally witnessing, there is a reason I retired in Texas, not some liberal stronghold blue state. That said, I’ve never felt a need to interact with law enforcement with a chip on my shoulder. It has seemed to work out very well for me over the past 67 years.

As I've said multiple times, I wouldn't have retired in Colorado except for this were my entire family's at.

I've also said this.multiple times.

What happened in Colorado was part of a plan. It really doesn't matter if you live in a Red state if the whole country goes Blue.

Nebraska, where I grew up, is a predominantly Red State with two blue cities, Omaha and Lincoln who have more people in them than the entire rest of the state combined.

Once you get away from I-25 Colorado is a predominantly Red State. But Denver and Aurora and Boulder and Castle Rock and hey guess what Colorado Springs is getting filled up with Democrats too, have more people living in them than the entire rest of the state combined.

Texas has Austin, San Antonio and Houston and probably Dallas that are blue and that's a good chunk of your population.

Trump has pissed a lot of Republican Leaning moderates off.

I suspect, I hope I'm wrong but I suspect that the next election is going to see a blue wave. It doesn't matter if the Democrats only get 51% of the Congress (House and Senate) and the White House. It's not enough to change the Constitution but it's enough to pass an assault weapons ban and pack the Supreme Court with judges that will agree with them that an assault weapons ban is entirely constitutional.

The fact that you live in a "Red State: won't matter worth a damn then.

Let's not forget Trump's first term and his first part of this term he had all three branches house, Senate and executive and still couldn't get National Repricosity passed.

ditto
i also try to read the room as how long have they sat in the car before they walk up
and the manner in which they walk up
i prefer not to litigate on the road side, but i will also not candidly give up rights
if i am not carrying i dont mention the ltc

IMO I think texas legislature screwed up my removing the requirement to inform if your stopped

although i have been stopped 2x not carrying the leo asked if i had a firearm with me and i answered honestly and that was that
imo exp the worse thing is when a leo says the laws says xxxxxxx.. you know its going to be rough
i have spent 3 nights 4 days in nm because of dumb stupid corrupt lazy donkey assssess
when i should have been sent on my way with a smile
so i read the room if i get pulled over
truthfully in texas the times i have been stopped i was speeding :ROFLMAO:

It wasn't that long ago on another thread on the same subject about a funny encounter I had on a stop. I was pulled over I think for speeding (I can't remember for sure) and had my wife and two out of state friends who were visiting along. We were headed to my local indoor range to do some shooting. Once the police officer came up to my window, I informed him of my LTC and that I was carrying a firearm on my person. And then I told him my wife has a LTC and she was armed. And then the folks in the back seat of my truck were also armed and had their state's version of a LTC. And I did say that their state and TX had a reciprocal agreement. And then told him I had several more cased pistols and ammo in the truck. Told him we were headed to the range. My friends put on a good show of being hokey folks from Wisconsin. Their accents made the officer laugh. Once again, being nice and polite had us on our way in a couple of minutes. Just a verbal warning.

so is ours in texas, they know before they get out of the cruiser , that you have a valid ltc
Not necessarily. If you are driving a vehicle not registered to you, they won't know about your LTC. They only know for sure "after" they run your driver's license. That is why there is a duty to inform for TX LTC carriers. It's strange how that is not the case for Constitutional carry.

oopps thats right
i forget about being in some elses car
i never let folks drive mine, so it leaves my mind
and yes you would think constitutional carry would be a REQUIREMENT (y)

I totally forgot about your drug laws and marijuana being legal there. But I don't use drugs, so I wouldn't have a hard time about a drug dog checking out my vehicle.
Fun fact, drug dogs get the handlers cues and will create probable cause based on how the handlers act, so enjoy your car being disassembled for no reason other than the cop is being a jack wagon!

Well, I live in South Texas and have to go through border check points occasionally. I've never had an issue with them taking my car or truck apart. Maybe the aroma and attitude you give off presents your bad luck about those things.
