New to Springfield, Started on the Budget-But-Nice End (XD Mod.3)

I was given my dad's late 90s Beretta 96 G Elite Brigadier, which is a 40 caliber 10+1 DA/SA handgun with a wider brigadier slide, smaller 3 white dot iron sights, decocker-only safety. It was unlikely he was going to give his old 1911 .45ACP to me, so I got the Beretta instead.

But seeing that it has no rails, no plates, doesn't seem to have parts (not a lot of parts from the 92/96FS will fit it, on account of being made a little differently with wider slide and shorter barrel), and not something I can afford to replace if something happens to it, decided to look at something I would actually carry. Especially since 40SW rounds aren't that inexpensive to practice off of.

Was looking around at some of the usual suggestions for 9mm, be it Glock 19/17, Sig Sauer P365X, S&W Shield Plus, Ruger RXM, some of the clones like the PSA Dagger, etc, but many didn't have the features at the price point I wanted, basically bright night or fiber sights, optical capable, has a rail, and felt decent in my hand. Til someone in a group I'm in pointed out that Smithfield makes a $300 pistol that has all that, and is actually a great budget gun out of the box.

Granted it's a full size, it feels comfortable and I feel like I can actually keep up practice with this one, already put a couple hundred rounds thru it since a week ago.

Since I have a habit of 'collecting' things I end up liking, there's a high chance that sometimes in the next year I'll end up with an Echelon if it's any similar to how the XD feels.

I'll likely keep this one optic free and train off the iron sights, but may still get a small light for it, something like an Olight Baldr maybe. And the Beretta from my dad will likely stay home with some 40SW JHP, treating it more of a home gun that's also a family heirloom.

You are correct in saying that the XD Mod.3 is great right out of the box. At least for me, that gun has felt “just right” every time I’ve shot it. I don’t think I need to put an optic on it, as I like the irons, and it is very accurate just that way. If you do decide to go with the Echelon, I am fairly sure you won’t be sorry.
And welcome to the forum from west central Minnesota.

Thanks, I'm across the lake, after you make it thru the cheese heads, West Michigan area.

By the way, thoughts on the 1911 series versus Echelon? Since I noticed at least a couple variations has a thin rail.

Hi,

Thanks, I'm across the lake, after you make it thru the cheese heads...

I resemble that remark. ;) Welcome to the forum from the Wild Wild Upper Midwest.

My modest collection includes an original XD9, an XD9 Mod.3, and two SA 1911s; Ronin 9mm and Garrison .45. Love'em all! To compare a 1911 to my Echelon 4.5F Comp is kind of like comparing apples to oranges. The 1911 is a classic that lots of folks enjoy, some for sentimental reasons, familiarity, legacy, even history. I like the all metal construction. I also appreciate the lower weight, higher capacity, and convenience of the modern polymer and modular pistols.

I think that's why my little collection keeps growing. I like'em all!

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

have a Mod 2, love it.
If the Mod 3 is anything like it, it'll serve you well for many years to come.
congrats
I was researching what changed when I was advised to check out the Mod.3 , seems like an upgrade all around with the lower price. The internals seem to remain the same from the Mod.2 , except for the trigger system (one post said it was a meld of some of the XDM triggers), exterior you can see already online (including the fiber front sight).

Since the internals is basically the same, I believe you when you mention it may last years to come. Already saw one video put about 8k rounds thru it and haven't field stripped it to clean/lube it and still hasn't malfunctioned (but I still feel like it's reckless to not keep the gun clean and oiled, but they're a guntuber so I guess they gotta 'test' it).

You're definitely right about the classic look, probably why they're attractive to me. Especially the way my dad's old one looks (like something out of a WWII movie). There's just no mistaking what it is.

Welcome from the same state that SA is from. Yes that is rural Illinois, no I don’t work for SA, and yes I know SA is located since I do go to the quad cities to go shopping.

Honestly I just acquired XDm fanboy status by a few people since I acquired 3 in the last 2 months.

I did a little dive into some of the changes between my XDm-9 and XDm Elite. The trigger, back strap safety, side serrations, irons, slide release, and recoil spring was different. Yes I have the full size of both and leaving my XDm 5.25” 10mm aside.

I’m sorry for been a dork redneck when it comes to certain things. I’ll even admit I like the M&P line and love shooting the CZ P10C. Plus I do have 1 Glock G23.5.

Nice , and love your curation. I knew they were from IL as I did a little bit of reading when I saw the gun marked "Made in Croatia" and was unaware of the partnership, was like ooooh ok, still an American company.

If I get carried away with acquisitions, there are chances that I'll branch out to other brands if it fills a niche. Friend of mine really really really loves his Keltec P17 and was strongly suggesting that to me as a carry (and it's about $200), but having done some reading around, I really had to have at least a 9mm, and the XD.3 for just $100 difference from that suggestion was a no brainer (though I would love the cost of ammo to be the same as the 22LR but wouldn't we all).

You do you. I started not to long ago shooting (about 3 years ago now) with a Glock 43X. Yes I was a Glock fanboy till I got the M&P M2.0 in 10MM. Since then I been kinda busy learning and trying to perfect everything in this hobby. I’m not perfect but still learning. We all have the go too stuff and I appreciate people on here that remind me of that. Yes the conversations get a little heated but the exchange of ideas are brought out. Also we do joke with each other because it’s what we do.

Welcome aboard and enjoy the ride.

Welcome, KB !

Spgfld Mod-3 is a good choice. (Sidenote: I love their 1911 lineup).
You mentioned Smith & Wesson Shield Plus - I looked at those and twice I almost bought. Glad I didn’t, because they recently came out with the Shield X, which is on top of my radar now. At least take a look before you buy anything else !

Far as I’m concerned , when it comes to plastics there are too many terrific options at or near the budget price, to go spending a lot of $$.
Metal frame guns (1911s, CZs etc) are a different matter 😉
